New York City has always been a fast-paced culture fueled by espresso, but these days the longest café line usually isn’t for brewed coffee, but rather its niche, softer alternative: an iced matcha latte.
What started as a substitute for your stronger, caffeinated coffee has evolved into its own cult aesthetic.
It begs the question: why has matcha become such a defining part of Gen Z café culture in NYC?

The city that swapped shots for whisks
Matcha’s pastel green catches the eye and highlights those that are performative in the best ways.
Digital cameras, ethically sourced tote bags, and plant life to match the color palette of its defining drink.
Curating a slower version of city life, turning a tiny cafe into a new kind of social space.
There is a very specific type of energy that makes it easy to spend twelve dollars on a drink and feel confident about it being a wellness investment.

Across New York City, Gen Z is transforming the modern New York café.
A place that smells earthy, sweet, and slightly grassy for twenty-somethings.
It becomes an image for the layered, photographed, customized online lives of Gen Z before a single sip has been taken.
Why matcha took over
Matcha in New York isn’t just a drink anymore — it’s become part of a lifestyle.
There is a recent influx of social perception and influence when it comes to wellness.
This has definitely inspired the odds of someone ordering a matcha.
With the rise of the “clean-girl” aesthetic and soft productivity aesthetics, an emphasis on self-care became a trend.
Coffee has become a symbol for late nights, fast-paced days, and city energy always awake.

Matcha was not only in its color, but also in its narrative, for everyone else.
The wellness hype was originally an aesthetic choice, showcasing a healthy lifestyle.
Matcha actually does have quite a few health benefits compared to a traditional coffee or latte.
With the rise of TikTok and the resurgence of Instagram, NYC café culture has adjusted from dark coffee shops to bright matcha cafes.
People post about the cutest café spot in the city, or the best drink they’ve had to rival coffee.
And so the matcha takeover became part of NYC culture.
Slow caffeine for fast cities
Matcha is actually one of the most potent antioxidant-rich foods out there.
Because of its preparation method, crushing up full leaves, more of the antioxidants stay within the ground-up powder.
Antioxidants can reduce inflammation and slow aging, making them perfect for twenty-somethings.
For those on an actual health kick, it might be nice to know they can fight off disease and infection.
Yet, it also releases caffeine; you just don’t get the jitters or a caffeine crash after drinking it.

Matcha still has caffeine, but it is released slowly. Unlike caffeine’s instant adrenaline boost, the caffeine in matcha is a smoother hit of energy.
It contains L-Theanine, which reduces how quickly the body absorbs caffeine, so slowing down the dispersal actually gives you all-day energy.
Just like with a coffee order, there are plenty of different ways and locations to indulge in when curating your own matcha order.
NYC has a variety of cafés, but where you go depends on the vibe you’re looking for.
So now that I’ve convinced you to at least take a sip of that pastel green beverage, here are a few places worth visiting.
The viral aesthetic cafés
KIJITORA
At 151 N 7th St, Brooklyn, NY 11249, KIJITORA (meaning tabby cat in Japanese) is a cat-themed café that creates its own comforting experience.

As listed on their website, “At KIJITORA, we believe in slowing down, savoring every sip, and appreciating craftsmanship in every cup.”
With menu items such as a Hojicha latte, a go-to matcha latte, or some super fun added flavor boosts with their iced strawberry matcha latte or iced mango matcha latte.
The cafe went viral after its strawberry matcha gained traction.
I must say, for those against the green, you should start here.
It’s worth stopping on the city’s busy streets to take time to relax, recharge, and indulge in some seriously delicious matcha.
12 Matcha
Residing at 54 Bond St, New York, NY 10012, 12 Matcha is really the viral stop that put NYC matcha on the scene.

This establishment embodies the aesthetic every matcha lover hopes to be immersed in.
Beautiful architecture and interior structures give guests in any corner of the café the best seat in the house.
The menu is simple, but the matcha is top-tier.
It’s sweet but not too sweet, and the matcha flavor is smooth and rich, without tasting grassy or powdery.
On TikTok and Instagram, 12 Matcha is the #1 trending matcha café.
With an impeccable traditional matcha latte or a delicious slice of matcha basque cheesecake, this is the place to fall in love with matcha.
Beyond the aesthetic drink spots
Kettl
Found at 70 Greenpoint Ave, Ground Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11222, Kettl focuses on the origins of matcha, a homage to the foundations of the drink’s creation.

All their cafés are designed to invite their consumers into the world of Japanese tea.
Not only do they give people a place to become part of the experience, but they also teach about matcha and tea.
They have classes and events taught by specialists that highlight the hands-on brewing and whisking techniques.
Kettl’s café menu offers plenty of options for whatever kind of matcha you’re looking to try.
Whether it’s shaken or sparkling matcha, or a variation of traditional matcha (Hukuju, Suiteki, Shirakawa), Kettl has a taste that transports you somewhere else.
Setsugekka
At 74 E 7th St, New York, NY 10003, Setsugekka in Manhattan, New York, is a teahouse that offers another indulgent trip into the history of matcha green tea.

This café has its own cool cornerstone, a Japanese traditional heavy stone grinder that freshly grounds their matcha.
Apart from Kettl, this café does offer teaching courses, but its real allure for serious matcha enthusiasts is its tea ceremonies.
One of which includes experiencing Koicha (a very thick matcha), which they offer in its authentic style and serve to you and three to five other guests in a closed-off tea ceremony of your own.
Their café menu features classic matcha lattes and also highlights their unique offerings, such as the Matcha (Koicha) Affogato: milk gelato with Koicha (thick tea) and a touch of Shochu.
If you’re serious about matcha or want to become immersed in the tea’s humble beginnings, either of these Japanese-inspired cafés can be a haven for you.
NYC’s low-key matcha scene
Aoko Matcha
As a newer cafe located at 275 Bleecker St, New York, NY, Aoko Matcha is under the radar of the NYC scene.

This café plays with the way matcha can be made and experienced.
Opened in August 2025, this NYC café offers a contemporary take on matcha through modern interpretations.
The menu is filled with loaded matcha parfaits, matcha latte frappes, and matcha soft serve.
But in the meantime, if you’re looking for a hidden gem of a matcha place, I would check out Aoko before the hype catches up to the name.
Matchaful
Located at 184 Prince St., New York, NY 10012, Matchaful, a female-founded business, takes the aims of nutrition and nourishment to heart.

They take inspiration from Japanese principles and have invented a creative menu made with premium matcha that goes beyond the traditional matcha latte.
Even better, they source their ingredients from organic practices and sustainable farming.
They offer their own twist on matcha lattes.
With flavors like Earth Glow, featuring ingredients such as butterfly pea flower, blue spirulina, maple, and Madagascar vanilla bean.
Or a sweeter, juicier flavor of Oishii Berry Latte made with strawberries, maple, and beet juice powder.
The culture behind the cup
The “Matcha Lifestyle” has become synonymous with Gen Z identity. The tea craze reflects the values the generation holds dear.
Gen Z is focused on taking time for themselves, prioritizing their mental health, and allowing themselves space to breathe.
Try something new, whether it be a drink, a space, or a place in the city.
Matcha doesn’t have to be your identity, but it does reflect a shift in culture because of Gen Z.
We like to post our lives, sure, but really, we were looking for a good time.
Matcha for beginners
Now that I’ve given you some killer recommendations, I need to give you some ways to order matcha.
As NYC’s matcha culture continues to grow, so do its options for taste and customization.
For newcomers, I would recommend an iced, lightly sweetened matcha latte. You can add your preference of milk.
It keeps its earthiness without tasting too grass-like and has a smoother texture.

Strawberry matcha is my personal favorite and has become increasingly popular online.
It’s an easy-to-order, delicious drink just about everyone would enjoy.
Iced matcha is usually more popular, but a hot matcha can highlight the tea’s bitterness and tonal notes, which is better if you’re more of a black coffee connoisseur.
For Gen Z café-goers, experimenting and exploring the different ways to experience matcha has become part of the culture itself.
Starting as a trend, trying sweeter, brighter, photogenic drinks can develop into a serious interest in the origins of matcha green tea.
More than a moment
At first, honestly, I thought my deep dive would reveal that NYC’s matcha obsession was mostly aesthetic.
Matcha may have entered NYC as a wellness trend, but it has since become part of the culture. The same city that glorified exhaustion and late-night espresso runs is now embracing aesthetics, moments, and delicious beverages.
