Does your fresh air intake consist solely of stepping outside to grab a coffee or a bagel? Does your walk to the subway, class, or work count as your daily dose of nature? If you answered yes, this is your official sign to touch grass…literally.
As spring rolls in, so does the pressure to get your life together. Suddenly it’s all about spring cleaning and becoming your most organized, productive self. All while you’re still juggling assignments, deadlines, work, and everything else. The burnout is real, and those of us that are already feeling it could use a real break.
Sure, a vacation sounds nice, but planning one? That’s expensive, time-consuming, and honestly just another thing to stress about. So instead, let me introduce the idea of a “green day.”
Simple as it sounds, a green day is a low-effort escape from the constant noise of the city. No packed itineraries, no overplanning, just one intentional day to slow down, be outside, and breathe. A break that actually feels like a break.
And the best part is, you don’t have to go far to find it. Here are five easy, accessible day trips from New York City that make it simple to step away, get some fresh air, and finally, touch grass.
1. Cold Spring
If you’re looking for a place that’s easy to get to but still feels like a real escape, Cold Spring is the spot. Cold Spring has lots to offer and is one of the easiest escapes from the city.
Just about an hour and fifteen minutes on the Metro-North Hudson Line from Grand Central, Cold Spring transports you somewhere that feels completely removed from the city. Pro tip, grab a seat on the left side of the train for scenic views of the Hudson River along the way. This will make the trip feel less like a train ride and more like part of the escape.
Once you arrive, I’d recommend starting with a hike if you want to fully commit to the “touch grass” agenda. If you’re up for a challenge, Breakneck Ridge is the more intense, workout-heavy option with incredible views. But if you’re leaning more toward relaxation, a walk along the waterfront is just as rewarding and probably more calming.
What makes Cold Spring special is there’s so much more it has to offer than just the amazing views. The town itself is filled with small shops and local spots worth wandering into. One of my favorites is Hudson Hil’s Café, known for its changing seasonal food and perfect for a post-walk brunch.
Afterward, take your time strolling down Main Street. Browse a few shops, grab a sweet treat, or just walk around with no stress and no obligations. Cold Spring is the perfect place for a reset. You can make the day entirely your own, whether you’re looking for activity, relaxation, or a bit of both.
2. Bear Mountain State Park
Bear Mountain State Park in Stony Point, NY, offers a more classic nature escape, a full immersion in the outdoors that feels completely opposite to the city. Surrounded by mountains, trees, and open space, it’s the kind of place where it’s easy to lose track of time and forget about your day-to-day stress.
Getting there is quite simple. One option is to take the Metro-North Hudson Line from Grand Central to Peekskill (about an hourlong ride) and then grab a quick 10–15 minute Uber or taxi to the park. Alternatively, if you time it right, there are also direct buses from Port Authority Bus Terminal that drop you even closer, making the trip even more convenient.
Once you arrive, you have plenty of options depending on your mood. There are hiking trails for every level, from easy, scenic walks to more challenging climbs. No matter which route you take, you’re rewarded with views that make the entire trip worth it.
3. Brooklyn Botanical Garden
Green does exist within the city if you know where to look, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is one of the best places to find it. Located right next to Prospect Park, it’s easily accessible by multiple subway lines, the 2, 3, 4, and 5 trains at Franklin Avenue, the B and Q trains at Prospect Park, or the S shuttle at Botanic Garden. It’s one of the simplest ways to relax without actually leaving NYC.
The garden rotates seasonal exhibits throughout the year, so there’s always something new to see. It’s really a place to just walk, sit, and take everything in at your own pace.
If you go in the spring, one of the biggest highlights is the Cherry Esplanade. Lined with rows of cherry blossom trees, it completely transforms the space and makes it feel like you’ve stepped into a different world.
Another standout is the Steinhardt Conservatory, an indoor exhibit made up of several climate-controlled glasshouses that recreate different ecosystems from around the world. As you move through the space, you’ll encounter everything from lush, humid tropical plants and colorful orchids to dry, sunlit desert cacti, all carefully curated to reflect their natural environments. It’s perfect if you want to keep exploring while still staying surrounded by nature, no matter the weather outside.
4. Minnewaska State Park
A slightly longer trip, but one well worth the effort, is Minnewaska State Park in Kerhonkson, NY. The easiest way to get there without a car is to take the Metro-North Hudson Line to Poughkeepsie, then grab a taxi to the park. The journey will be a bit longer than others, anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours, but that’s part of the charm; it’s quieter and far less crowded than other destinations.
Once you arrive, the landscape speaks for itself. Lake Minnewaska is famous for its clear blue waters and dramatic surrounding cliffs. There are several easy loops around the lake for scenic walks, or you can branch off into longer trails if you’re feeling adventurous.
A standout highlight is Awosting Falls, a stunning waterfall just a short walk from the parking area. It’s easily accessible yet still feels tucked away in nature. I love coming here to simply sit and watch; the waterfall never fails to amaze me.
5. Fire Island (Ocean Beach)
If you would rather touch sand than grass, Fire Island is the place for you. Getting there is very doable as a day trip, but be prepared for a journey longer than an hour. Take the LIRR from Penn Station to Bay Shore, then hop on the ferry to Fire Island. The ferry ride itself is part of the experience; stunning views over the water immediately set the tone for the peaceful day ahead.
Once you arrive, you’ll notice that there are no cars, instantly removing you from the city’s noise and hustle. Fire Island is mostly boardwalk, with very few roads, which gives it a relaxed vibe. From there, you can explore the island’s highlights, including the wide-open beaches of Robert Moses State Park or the Fire Island Lighthouse.
Sometimes grass isn’t enough; you need a full scene change. Between the sand, the ocean, and the breeze, Fire Island completely transforms your surroundings, giving you the kind of relaxation that only comes from being somewhere truly different.
A concrete jungle escape
The point of a green day isn’t to check things off a to-do list; it’s to do the complete opposite. Life in the city can feel overwhelming, and sometimes you just need a reminder of what it feels like to exist outside of that constant noise and pressure.
All it takes is a few hours to step away, breathe, and reset—my personal favorite place to do that is Cold Spring. Close your laptop, pick a spot, and go touch grass.
