Even on a budget, you can immerse yourself in the beautiful hues of orange and red that fill the city.

With this fall city guide, you can prepare for the perfect fall city trip without breaking the bank. Throw on your favorite boots and sweater and jump right into the bustling excitement of NYC during autumn.

Food and drink

Walking through the city with a fun drink in your hand is the perfect way to start your day. There are plenty of cafes and Instagram worthy coffee shops throughout the city.

NYC is filled with great places to grab a quick meal like a street cart, or sit down for a full-course meal.

Blank Street Coffee

If you are on TikTok, you have probably heard everyone raving over Blank Street Coffee.

NYC is filled with Blank Street, so it won’t be difficult to find one nearby!

Blank Street Coffee is known for its fun flavors and unique combinations. For the fall, they have made additions of banana bread, carrot cake and gingersnap flavors. Blank Street also has plenty of pastry options to choose from, making for the perfect morning pick-me-up!

Magnolia Bakery

Magnolia Bakery has several locations throughout Manhattan near multiple attractions. They offer special fall goodies, including a limited-time pumpkin pudding.

On their fall menu, they feature other pumpkin-inspired treats, including a pumpkin cupcake and pumpkin cheesecake. If pumpkin isn’t your thing, they have blondie brownies, a variety of cookies and a banana menu.

PopUp Bagels

Another TikTok success that has captivated the city is PopUp Bagels.

They are known for their rotating menu and ever-so-soft pull-apart bagels and decadent smears. When visiting NYC, a bagel is a must! PopUp Bagels is the perfect way to see what the craze is.

Delis

Deli’s are a cheap way to immerse yourself into the city culture.

Breakfast sandwiches are the perfect way to start your day, and at many delis, go for less than $5. Bagels are another great way to fill yourself up for a long day for a reasonable price.

NYC pizza

If you are not a New York native, it is a rite of passage to try a New York slice.

Luckily, the city has a cheap pizza spot around every corner! Joe’s Pizza, L’Industrie and Dollar Slice are New York staples that are easily accessible throughout the city.

Los Tacos No. 1

Los Tacos No. 1 is another TikTok sensation, known for their variety of taco options and cheap prices.

This is another easy eatery found throughout Midtown Manhattan and other booming areas in the city. They feature tacos and quesadillas as their main entrees on the menu alongside typically Mexican-style sides like chips and guacamole.

Street carts

If you do not want to splurge on a meal or treat, street carts are always the way to go!

Choose from various cuisines on every corner. Street carts typically are inexpensive and perfect for a quick, on-the-go meal or snack.

Activities

New York City is filled with fall festivities around every corner.

While some events cost more than others, several activities will not break the bank. From Midtown Manhattan to the neighboring boroughs, fall fun is easy to find!

Governor’s Island

Take the ferry to Governor’s Island from either Manhattan or Brooklyn! If you grab a ticket before 11 a.m. on the weekend, the fair is completely free! If not, it is just $2 for a ferry ticket to the perfect fall escape! Governor’s Island is on the coast of the city. You get the perfect view of the skyline and Hudson River from the Island.

Governor’s Island has plenty of fall-related things to do. From pumpkin picking to tours, you can get right in the fall spirit. Governor’s Island hosts an annual Pumpkin Point Festival in late October that features a huge pumpkin patch for picking pumpkins and trick-or-treating throughout the historic town.

Alongside the festival, all autumn long the town is adorned with beautiful fall colors, which make for a perfect walk, bike ride or picnic. Governor’s Island also features plenty of food options from sweet treats to meals.

If you enjoy fall scenery brought to life through artistic agriculture, the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx is perfect. The gardens put on a display of creations including spooky gourds, autumn plants and pumpkins which they call “Fall-O-Ween.”

The fall foliage is plentiful. You can explore the vibrant colors of the Thian Family Forest or let your creativity fly through pumpkin carving contests. Huge and funky-shaped pumpkins are on display all season, which make for the perfect pictures and laughs.

A Tim Burton inspired Nightmare Before Christmas light trail is the perfect way to end your evening. The trail lights up the night and features the characters, music and scenes of the Tim Burton Classic. While this event does cost an extra fee, it immerses you into a new world.

West Village walk

Around Halloween time, there is no better place to find fall-inspired decor than the Upper East Side and Upper West Side.

People in the area decorate their stoops with pumpkins, lights and all sorts of holiday fun. It’s the perfect free way to jump into a fall atmosphere.

Book shop crawl

Nothing screams fall like cozying up in an oversized sweater with a good book. Find your next fall read by going on a book shop crawl in the city.

Scattered throughout NYC are multiple independent and used bookstores. Some popular used book stores include Westsider Rare and Used Book Inc., Sweet Pickle Books, Strand Book Store and East Village Books. Sweet Pickle Books went viral on TikTok for not only their cute ambiance and book selection but also for their pickle-inspired merchandise and jars of pickles.

Throughout the city, you can find a book store on almost every block!

Markets

New City City is known for housing many backgrounds and cultures. Markets are a great way to experience the culmination of those in the city.

Greenmarkets are located throughout all five boroughs and are a great way to grab fresh produce. Several locations throughout the city are home to seasonal markets. Union Square, Chelsea and Grand Central are just a few locations throughout the city that sell fresh produce, different delicacies, clothes and artwork.

Flea markets are also abundant throughout the city and make for a fun and affordable shopping experience.

The open-air markets cater to the season, offering fall treats such as apple cider donuts and pumpkin spice lattes.

Union Square Market is the picture-perfect fall wonderland, featuring classic fall favorites like butternut squash soup and warm cider. It’s also a great way to shop locally!

Central Park

Part of the New York City experience is visiting the iconic Central Park. The autumn colors burst through the skyline and make for a beautiful view. The orange and red hues in the tree-lined park, mixed with the beauty of the city in the distance is the perfect fall escape. Locations like The Ramble, Bow Bridge, the Belvedere Castle and The Mall, are meant for beautiful fall days.

Central Park has a conservatory garden, which encapsulates the season with blooming fall plants. Bring your own food and throw a picnic with a view!

For kids or sightseers, the Central Park Zoo is a fun activity for all! From sea lion tricks to tropical rainforests and animal feedings, the zoo is guaranteed to have something for everyone.

Central Park is home to several different vendors, which is a perfect place to grab a quick bite, purchase homemade artwork or buy a quirky souvenir.

Catch a show

The best part of the city is its accessibility to a variety of on and off Broadway performances. Off Broadway is a great and less expensive way to be transported into a new world. No matter the season, you can’t go wrong with a play.

Tip: to save money rush tickets at the box office or even enter ticket lotteries!

This season, many new and returning shows are entering the theater district. “Beetlejuice,” based on the film, will make its return to the Broadway stage. It is a perfect way to get into the Halloween Spirit!

Later this fall, a star-studded cast is reviving the show “Chess.” Lea Michele and Aaron Tveite headline the powerful Cold War inspired story.

If Broadway isn’t your thing, catch a comedy show, concert or opera!

Free Museums

Whether you are a fan of history, art or science, there is a museum in NYC for you.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) are pay-as-you-wish museums, meaning you can pay as little or as much to enter. Both places can keep you busy for hours on end through their captivating exhibits.

There are always deals going on throughout the museums. The Museum of the Moving Image is free on Thursdays from 2-6 p.m. There are also multiple museums that give free and reduced tickets to college students, so make sure to check online before you go!

Transportation advice

NYC is a walkable city, meaning that there is plenty to do within walking distance. No matter what part of the city you are visiting, it is always bustling with food options, shops and things to do.

Taking public transit is a great option to turn to when traveling across the city. The subways may seem intimidating at first, but it is a very simple system to navigate. You can check train times and locations on the MTA app. The subway travels throughout the borough, making most attractions just a short, a cheap, train ride away.

I recommend skipping the taxis. They tend to cost more, when a subway or walking is much cheaper. They also get stuck in the city traffic. When you walk or take a train, you avoid the packed city streets and traffic lights on every road.

Fall is the perfect time to visit the city that never sleeps. With the countless fall activities offered throughout the city, you can find many ways to kill your boredom and get into the spooky spirit.
