Times of panic tend to either bring people together or forcefully divide us. News of coronavirus has caused many to flock to shops looking to stock up on daily necessities. As a result of this activity, certain people have bought way more than what they need in hopes that they may exploit their neighbors and fellow humans.

Tales of hoarders from all over the world have consistently been looked down upon by the general public. Recently an Australian man made headlines for attempting to sell his 5,400 rolls of toilet paper to a local market.  This story was originally picked up by the local news in Adelaide Australia after the owner of the shop reported the hoarder.

This man had attempted to sell his collection of toilet paper online via eBay but was banned as the site has established a firm stance against price gouging. eBay has also released a statement to its users regarding the current state of the website as it adapts to the stresses placed upon it by COVID-19. The statement mentions that they have either taken down or blocked over “five million listings.” Additionally, they are urging customers to report instances of price gouging and have restricted certain items including toilet paper, baby formula, and disinfectant supplies.

Price gouging and hoarding has become near commonplace lately. If you or someone you know happens to come across an instance of price gouging you can report the vendor to local officials, typically on your local city’s website. Most online vendors also have ways that you can report specific vendors for overcharging on essential items in the wake of COVID-19

When it comes to this Australian man and his toilet paper fortune, many articles are discussing ways to either punish him or redistribute his stash. I’d hope that he comes to regret this choice as he stares down his 5,000+ rolls and that he chooses to donate/give away the rolls to those who haven’t been able to buy any as a result of his actions and that of other hoarders.
