A man in Australia has had a more bizarre start to the new year than most of us. Luke Voskresensky was found on Sunday 3rd January hiding, naked in a tree in a crocodile habitat. The two fishermen, Cam Faust and Kev Joiner, were setting crab traps in an area outside of Darwin, capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, when they discovered Voskresensky covered in mud, insect bites and cuts sitting on a branch of a tree.

Mr Voskresensky explained his nudity to the two bewildered fishermen by claiming that his clothes had been used ‘for bits and pieces over the way’, and that he had stayed alive by eating snails.  Cam Faust was not convinced by this explanation, stating that it did not make sense to him. Faust also commented that:

“He had a nest made up in the tree, and he was only laying a meter (39 inches) above the water and there were crocs in the water so he has done well to survive.”

Joiner added that they assumed the naked man had enjoyed a wild New Year’s party and had simply gotten a bit carried away (ending up naked, in a crocodile habitat, covered in mud). Faust and Joiner were apprehensive about rescuing Voskresensky initially, however Joiner pointed out that he was in such a bad state that they felt a responsibility:

“Once we’d seen how bad he was and how many cuts he had all over him and he was dehydrated and pretty weak … we thought we’d better get him in the boat,

Voskresensky was actually a fugitive, having been charged with with armed robbery, multiple aggravated assaults, deprivation of liberty and stealing. He had been freed on bail initially, but had cut off his electronic monitoring device and had fled police surveillance.

Voskresensky was immediately taken to hospital and treated for exposure, whilst kept under police guard. As a result, he was not required to attend court for the renewed charges of breaching bail and aggravated assault. His court date remains February 9th.

All we can think about now is: what really happened to Voksresensky’s clothes?
