Famous actor Matthew McConaughey has revealed how he managed to lose so much weight for his role as Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club. The actor famously lost 50lbs for the role in order to correctly portray what the body of an AIDS patient would look like.

In a new episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Matthew McConaughey told Rogan that he became ‘militant’ about losing the weight that he needed to for the role and put himself on an extreme diet for five months. The diet was very specific, consisting of three egg whites in the morning, five ounces of fish with a handful of vegetables for lunch and then the same for dinner. This very strict diet meant that McConaughey lost 2.5lbs a week without any exercise and he was still able to drink wine without undoing all of his progress.

He continued: “What I learned from it is that the body is more resilient than we give it credit for.

“The power I lost from the neck down equally or more sublimated to the neck up. My mental gain was so acute and so on point, that I was clinically smart.”

It seems to have been worth it though, as McConaughey was praised by critics for his role in the film and he actually won the Best Actor award at the 86th Academy Awards. However, McConaughey has previously said that he ‘chewed a lot of ice’ while he was losing weight for the role – something that I do not envy him for. He has also previously said that his weight loss meant that he needed three hours less sleep at night and that he had an amazing amount of energy.
