“It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s— an Amazon Drone!”

As of August 29th, Amazon has finally been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to begin its air drone deliveries.

Amazon has been granted a Part 153 Certificate by the FAA, which in summary enables the company to “safely and efficiently” implement drones into its delivery system.

The Process

According to the FAA’s requirements, Amazon had to undergo an extensive checklist in order to attain its approval. Stages included from pre and formal application requirements, to design, performance, and administrative assessments.

Long has it been Amazon’s dream to step into the future and work with/alongside machines. In the past, Amazon had been testing drone technology since as early as 2013. Flash forward to 2019, the company had submitted its application for FAA approval.

The Vision

According to Amazon Prime Air, their aim is to deliver a customer’s package in no later than 30 minutes. Meanwhile, packages must weigh 5lbs or less to qualify for drone delivery.

Aside from Amazon, other companies such as UPS and Wing have also been approved for drone travel; now if only fast food deliveries got in the action…

In light of the recent news, however, customers will still have to wait a while, as Amazon has yet to initiate trials…
