Reeling about the uptick in turkey sales that inevitably happen during the holidays? So are vegans. In a particularly extreme situation, an ordinary turkey farmer was taking the heat from some very angered vegans. But it seems as though his holiday wishes have been granted, and he’s getting the last laugh.
35 year-old farmer – Matt Carter – came under intense vegan-fueled fire a few months ago. Upset over Carter’s selling of turkeys, a group of animal-cruelty conscious vegans not only graffiti’d his farm but also sent death threats.
Though Carter was surely pissed off about the ordeal, he is rolling in the dough now. And he’s saying a proverbial “eff you” to the people who attacked his place. Thanks to the media hype surrounding the turkey farm, Carter completely sold out of his stock ahead of Christmas!
The farmer had this to say about the dramatic turn of events:
“We sold out. In previous years, we always sold more white barn reared ones, but this year – because of the extra publicity – we sold out of the free-range ones.
It seems like although the vegan mafia wanted us to stop killing turkeys, it hasn’t happened.
What has happened is people have decided to buy more and go for slightly better welfare turkey, going for free range.
I’d say that we’ve done double what we’d usually do. We’ve sold thousands.
In previous years, we always sold more barn-reared ones. But this year, we’ve sold around, say, 800 of those and, say, 1,500 free-range ones.
If you are going to eat meat, I think our way is the best way of doing it – where you can see the animals and then go to the butchers and buy the meat.
It you are totally anti-meat, then go and start with the huge big factory farms, not the small businesses who do it like we do it.
It was the bit about naming it was the bit they really didn’t like. I guess that’s because it brings it home to them that it’s a real animal – but that’s the whole point.
That’s why we treat them with respect and look after them.”
Carter makes a great point here. Killing and selling turkeys is how he makes his living, and at least he does it humanely and with the best possible meat. There are plenty of large corporations out there who don’t give a gobble about the life of a turkey – pre-demise. If the vegans want to go after anyone, they should start with the big factory farms and leave the small businesses alone.
