Technology just gets better and better!
Kendrick Lamar just became the first rapper in history to receive the Pulitzer Prize. The ceremony took place on April 16th at Columbia University in New York. While Lamar did show up in person to accept the prize, he did not give a speech, or even a brief comment during the process. It was only through Facebook, after receiving the award, that Lamar was able to present a brief speech to the public. Thanks technology!
Lamar kept it short and sweet:
“It’s an honour … I’ve been writing my whole life, so to get this type of recognition – it’s beautiful.”
The prize jury beautifully complemented the rapper by saying his latest album is a “virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African American life.” Kendrick Lamar has just secured his spot in the history books, that is for sure!
You can watch the full ceremony below! (Skip to 55:14 if you just want hear Lamar give his one sentence speech about the honor).
