It’s officially kind of official. The Washington Redskins have a new name: the Washington Football Team.
Washington and its majority owner Daniel Snyder has been pressured on numerous occasions to change the now former-name. He has never budged, but after threats from FedEx, Nike and more, it became in Snyder’s best interest to change the outdated moniker.
The “Washington Football Team” is not the final renaming of the Redskins. The team will continue to search for a new moniker that fits what the aforementioned Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera find appropriate.
At the same time, it appears Snyder and the rest of Washington’s ownership group are ready to roll out week 1of the 2020 NFL season with “Football Team” as their mascot.
Now, there may be some copyright issues when it comes to picking a new name, but releasing this information makes me believe this is all a public relations stunt.
There is no way a NFL team with all that power wouldn’t be able to get a new name easily. They have enough money and power to do what they want.
With that being said, I believe this is all a PR move because, the most recent news surrounding Snyder and the team revolves around having an offensive name / mascot, and the sexual harassment of 15 women.
So, instead of having that news continue to circulate, I assume Snyder and company just decided to throw out some nonsense to distract from their inexcusable actions.
I know that if I was an owner I wouldn’t be excited to trot out to no team name when the season is almost two months away. There should be plenty of time to get the naming rights, as well as a new uniform concept. As I said, they are the NFL, and the NFL is king.
