Former President of the United States, Donald Trump, has dominated many news headlines for his controversial opinions. His statements and claims have gotten him banned from popular social media sites such as Instagram and Twitter.

A statement from Twitter defends the decision to ban the former President from the site, citing “the risk of further incitement of violence.” Whilst plenty of Americans were glad to see the end of Trump’s time in office, Republican supporters are keen to see a re-election of Trump in the year 2024.

Previous Comments and Controversies

Trump famously banned transgender individuals from serving in the US military. His comments regarding the transgender community were met with conflicting global reviews, many of which criticized Trump for his conservative and damaging views. Particularly from the perspective of his immense political power as President, Trump’s views are potentially dangerous. Trump’s other comments regarding the results of the 2021 American election were met with a ban from the majority of social media sites. Trump’s encouragement of violence to protestors resisting the results of the election in 2021 meant social media platforms such as Twitter banned the Former President to protect further individuals from getting hurt in the protests.

Biden on Transgender Laws

The former President has now made rash promises to revert current President Joe Biden’s progressive laws for the transgender community. Throughout his time in office, Biden’s laws have been reflective of the society we live in and the necessity for change. In October 2021, the State Department issued the first U.S. Passport with an “X” gender marker. This allows non-binary individuals a gender-neutral identification on a legal document. Biden also reversed Trump’s military ban on transgender individuals joining the military.

Trump’s Stance for 2024

In a recent statement, Trump outlined his intentions for transgender legislation if he were to be re-elected in 2024. The former President intends to only recognize two legal genders, overturning the work Biden has done. Trump’s attacks fall primarily on the younger generation, massively reducing valuable support for minors transitioning into America. Trump announced that he wants schools to promote the values of the conventional nuclear family. He also wants to significantly reduce the medical care given to young people, blaming pharmaceutical companies for their involvement in “covering up horrific long-term side effects of sex transitions in order to get rich.” Trump further discredits the idea of transgender identity by claiming the concept was an invention of “the radical left.”

What Does This Mean?

Ultimately, Trump’s radical views are both upsetting and worrying as we draw closer to the election in 2024. In a recent survey, it was discovered that interest in migrating to America has significantly decreased, following mass political controversy from Trump’s first time in office. Despite currently undergoing multiple criminal investigations, Trump still intends to run for Presidency. Other candidates running for Presidency include Stacey Abrams, John Bolton, and current President Joe Biden hoping for re-election. Trump has already proven to have a significant network of supporters, yet these new comments could influence the turnout of 2024.

Support

The idea that young people can identify their own gender and sexuality is undermined by Trump but supported by national associations. The American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Academy of Paediatrics support the notion that supporting health care is beneficial to the mental health of young people transitioning. There is support to be found in the US for anyone struggling with harmful views regarding transgender identity.
