Owning 150 bottles of wine really is the dream, but where would you even store it all? Australian builder, Murray Berrill has a solution to that.
On April 2nd, Berrill shared an interesting Facebook post on his company’s Facebook page, Murray Berrill Constructions. It shows a staircase that Berrill transformed into a wine cellar, with 12 slide-able compartments. In total, the cellar can fit 156 bottles of wine. In the post, Berrill laments the “dead space” under staircases, and presents his wine cellar idea as a method for solving the issue.
Since it was shared, the post has garnered many supportive comments, likes, and shares. The comments themselves are very supportive, calling Berrill “clever”. One commenter even referred to the staircase as the “stairway to heaven”. The first questions that may come to mind regard the actual structural integrity of this kind of project. In that vein, Berrill is very reassuring. When speaking with Daily Mail, he said:
“’The drawers are a wide width and are very strong – we spent around $500 at Bunnings just on the drawers alone”.

Other questions revolve around how the wine is kept under ideal conditions. The wine compartments themselves are insulated and the staircase has a built-in thermometer. Moreover, Berrill may install a unit to keep the wine cool. A lot of thought went into the best fit for the bottles themselves. If you want to recreate this wine cellar staircase at home, then be prepared to shell out the estimated $5,000 cost.
