There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding the world-famous director, Harvey Weinstein, over the last year. He has been accused of sexual assault by many famous actresses. Including Angelina Jolie, Cara Delevigne, Gwyneth Paltrow, and now Uma Thurman has spoken out too.

We all know and love Uma Thurmon the 90’s classic Pulp Fiction, among many other films such as Kill Bill (2003). Pulp Fiction was arguably one of the films that helped Weinstein rise to fame and excel in his career is a director. Inevitably, he would not have been able to do this without Thurman.

Things are never as perfect as they seem though. In recent times, Thurman has spoken out about the violation and exploitation she experienced at the hands of Weinstein. According to the NY Times, Thurman was always wary of Weinstein and hesitant to be left alone with him. Therman reports that there were multiple situations wherein Weinstein attempted to assault her. These included physically grabbing her, exposing himself to her, and grooming her in order to get her alone in a room with him.

‘She warned Weinstein, “If you do what you did to me to other people you will lose your career, your reputation, and your family, I promise you.”

Her memory of the incident abruptly stops there.’- New York Times

After the incident of Thurman being alone with Weinstein and confronting him, her assistant described:

“Her eyes were crazy and she was totally out of control. I shoveled her into the taxi and we went home to my house. She was really shaking.” Herman said that when the actress was able to talk again, she revealed that Weinstein had threatened to derail her career.”

The allegations are sad and shocking, especially considering Thurman has had experiences with sexual assault in the past, being raped when she was only 16. The experience with Weinstein must have only added to her pre-existing trauma. But she’s an incredibly strong and successful woman and obviously is extremely brave in speaking out about her past.

Shocked, but not all together surprised. It is about time some legal action was taken against the despicable man. Enough women have spoken out to highlight the atrocious acts he’s committed, and the extent to which Weinstein abuses his power and has a twisted, misogynistic view of women. Hopefully the women he’s hurt will be able to strive forwards in their lives without feeling trapped by the pain he inflicted.
