What has been dubbed ‘the world’s loneliest house’ sits on a grassy, remote island in Iceland and has been uninhabited for at least 100 years. The beautiful and scenic island is called Elliðaey and it lies just south of Iceland. It is said that originally the island did have habitants, however, in the 1930s the small population relocated for the mainland lifestyle.

Multiple rumors have been created about the owner of this lonely house and why it is there. One of the biggest rumors is that a billionaire bought it as a safe house in case there is a zombie apocalypse!

Another rumor is that Björk, the Icelandic singer, owns it and is attempting to buy the island from the government. Other rumors, such as a dedicated, religious hermit inhabits the lonely house.

All of these are just rumors, because it turns out that the building is in fact a hunting lodge that belongs to the Elliðaey Hunting Association. The land has a large amount of puffin, which are legally hunted even though they are an endangered species.

Since the island is a nesting are for sea birds, such as storm petrels, it is actually a protected area and natural reserve. Just to warn you, the island does not include running water, electricity, or indoor plumbing. Does this sound like the ideal getaway for you, or do you prefer mainland accommodations?
