Are you desperate to travel but terrified to set foot on a plane? Have you developed a debilitating dependency on alcohol since being ordered not to leave your house six months ago?
Now, thanks to Qantas Airlines, you can kinda-sorta satisfy both conditions with an ersatz airline experience! For $1,470 you can purchase your own fully-loaded beverage cart from a retired 747.
The asking price may seem a bit hefty, but remember, you not only get the booze, but you also get the cart! On it, you’ll find 160 mini bottles of wine, two regular-sized bottles of champagne, and a ton of airline snacks like salted almonds, biscuits, and “Tim Tams.” You’ll even get Qantas PJs and blankets. But if that’s still a bit too rich for you, Qantas is also selling half-loaded drink carts for only $975.
Qantas, an Australian airline, retired their last 747 in July 2020. They had planned to slowly phase out the huge flying machines, now eclipsed by the more popular airbuses, but the coronavirus pandemic expedited their plans. The passengerless final flight carried six pilots and sketched out a Qantas kangaroo logo over the east coast of Australia. Aw.
Here’s how to get the most out of your purchase and enjoy some role-playing fun. First, dress your spouse up in a flight attendant outfit while you sit on the couch in your airplane pajamas. Then, have them roll their cart over to you while a movie that received mixed reviews in the theaters plays on your TV. Next, consume multiple tiny bottles of wine, shove entire bags of crackers in your mouth, and demand an extra blanket (the cart comes with two). Finally, pass out in your seat with your chest covered in salty crumbs. It’ll almost feel like you’re actually on a flight!
In all seriousness though, owning a piece of memorabilia from a retired 747 would be cool. The carts have been used on actual flights (not including the comestibles), so they really are pieces of history. Qantas Executive Manager of Product and Service, Phil Capps, said: “There has been huge demand for Qantas 747 memorabilia… The fact they come fully stocked with some of Qantas’ most popular onboard service items will hopefully inspire some high-flying fun at home.”
