Perfect for January 2018 New Year Resolutions, Vegetarian Tourists, and Travelers.

The travel website; Oliver’s Travels, has created a map of the most vegetarian-friendly counties in the world.  This infographic is perfect for vegetarian foodies and enthusiasts planning their travels in this new year.

Oliver’s Travels understand that traveling as a vegetarian can be a difficult task, so they created their Global Vegetarian Index to rank every country from best to worst for vegetarian travelers.

The Global Vegetarian Index is calculated by three contributing factors; the annual consumption of meat per capita, the number of vegetarian restaurants available, and the number of vegetarian restaurants in relation to population size.

The website’s methodology is:

All countries were then ranked for each category and awarded a score for each category based on their ranking. Where two or more countries had the same value for one category they were awarded the same score for this category.

Each country’s scores across the three categories (Number of vegetarian-friendly restaurants; Number of people per vegetarian restaurant; Annual meat consumption per capita) were added together to create the country’s Global Vegetarian Index score.

It is important to note that this map is not an exhaustive and comprehensive investigation of each country’s dietary habits, due to some data not being available. It is just an easier way for tourists to find a bite to eat in the country they are in.

Which is the most vegetarian-friendly country?

According to the study,  Seychelles is the most vegetarian-friendly country, with a total Global Vegetarian Index score of 328. With Thailand and Malaysia, following.

Interestingly, the UK (inc Isle of Man and the Channel Islands), has 4,433 vegetarian restaurants. However, meat consumption is 84.2 per capita (KG). Similarly, The USA tops the UK with a whopping 18,975 vegetarian restaurants however, it also has an elevated amount of meat consumption which comes up to about: 120.2 Kg.

You can see the rest of the map down below and you can check out what other countries are included on the list, here.
