When people go to a forest or some kind of wooded area, it is usually to get away from the city and enjoy nature. Listen to birds calling to one another, see some wildflowers just beginning to bloom. Sounds like a nice way to relax and get some exercise right? Well in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington state, something else was found that is definitely not found in nature naturally.

According to paulsacca (brobible.com) there were “Two suitcases full of meth were found in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest on Monday” (paulsacca 1). He goes on to say that there were “186 pounds of narcotics in the suitcases discovered by the town of Mazama, Washington” (paulsacca 1). Most of us packed clothes in our suitcases. Whoever this is, clearly did not have vacation plans in mind when they packed.

The Sheriffs of Okanagon County though are used to dealing with drug cases though, just not quite like this one. In a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, it is stated that “Cocaine has been the main narcotic purchased by detectives over the last few years but methamphetamine is a close second” (paulsacca 2). The statement goes on further to say “The task force also works border cases involving smuggling, usually marijuana cases” (paulsacca 2). The Sheriff’s Office was also working with Homeland Security on this case, according to paulsacca.

Clearly, this is not a surprise but is not an every day occurrence for the Sheriff’s Office. And whoever’s suitcase this is, they probably aren’t going to claim it. This is not just an every day drug deal that was busted. This is a large amount of meth that did not make it into several hands of distributors and buyers. That is the good news. The bad news, though, is that once the news of this fades, another two suitcases may show up in the forest again, with a better plan for delivery though. The Okanagon Sheriffs won a battle but they are far from winning the war. Hopefully, more patrolling of the park will mean keeping more drugs away from users. Only time will tell.
