At a White House press conference on July 14, President Donald Trump made headlines, not for his COVID-19 updates, but his hair. There was a DEEP sense surprise from many when Trump walked out with grey hair and noticeably more natural looking skin tone. Twitter immediately went crazy over the new do.
Trump is known for his deep, orange tan and perfected coiffed blonde hair… and yes, his crass, rude humor, and need for statesman training. However, it has always been the go-to zing on Twitter that Trump is called a “Cheeto” or “orange face”. It is also frequently discussed whether his hair is real. And one thing that everyone knows about Trump is everything he does is for a purpose.
There are a couple of theories about why Trump has suddenly decided to look his age instead of a stale children’s snack. Like many, perhaps Trump had been unable to get a hair appointment. Many US states are still dealing with large numbers of positive COVID-19 cases and “non-essential” businesses are still closed. Maybe this is what finally convinced Trump to go natural.
Or could Trump’s new do be a political ploy ahead of the elections in November? This seems to be the more likely theory. Those in power famously go grey as the pressures of leading take their toll. Obama and Bush both sported grey hair towards the middle of their second terms. It is distinctly possible that Trump is at least trying to look the part of elder statesman, even if his mouth cannot perform the task.
Trump’s hair has been making headlines for awhile now — the grey hair is just the latest in the saga. This past February, Trump was photographed as a wind gust pushed his hair back from his forehead. In the now viral picture, we all got a glimpse of the orange spray tan ring around his face, as well as Trump’s high hairline. Never one to back down from a fight, Trump claimed the picture was “photoshopped” and “fake news”.
“Fake news” or not, Trump is a 76-year-old man and finally looks like one. While many of us will never like the man or agree with his politics, I think we can all agree it is nice to see him look less like an oompa-loompa and more human.
