The new Netflix romantic drama From Scratch is based on the true story of series writer Tembi Locke. The tale comes from her memoir of the same name. Now she and co-creator Attica Locke are adapting their personal journey and bringing it to the small screens.
Zoe Saldaña stars Amahle “Amy” Wheeler, Eugenio Mastrandrea as Lino, Danielle Deadwyler as Zora, Keith David, Lucia Sardo, Judith Scott, Paride Benassai, Kellita Smith and Roberta Rigano star in the drama series.
With the help of actress Reese Witherspoon and her production company, Hello Sunshine, Tembi and Attica Locke’s new show is set to be released on Oct. 21. The series will contain eight episodes total, with all four seasons premiering in six hours.

From Scratch takes place in Italy, with American student Amahle “Amy” Wheeler making the trek to the country for her study abroad program. As Amy spends her time in Italy, she meets and falls in love with Sicilian chef Lino, who becomes an important part of Amy’s life. According to Netflix, their “whirlwind” and “cross-cultural romance” face many challenges.
When Lino is faced with health challenges, their two families will come together to support the couple. The streaming service also promises some lighthearted moments “alongside the more serious ones.”
Based on the trailer, the love story takes place in Italy and America. So did production go overseas? The answer is yes!
According to What’s On Netflix, filming of the show begins in April 2021 and ends in August, the month that cameras began rolling in Los Angeles. The romantic backdrop of the show was provided by Florence, Italy, where it is filmed until the production ends in July.
All eight episodes of From Scratch will be released Friday, Oct. 21, on Netflix.
