Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 brings Freddy Fazbear and friends back to the big screen to terrorize a pizzeria (again) and this time the outside world as well. It’s time to find out what these possessed animatronics and their evil creator are up to this time around, as well as how it ties into the expansive lore of the franchise series.
Recap
The last time we left our intrepid main characters, they had returned to somewhat normal after the events of Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF).
Security guard Mike Schmidt survives his encounter with Freddy and friends alongside his sister Abby.
Mike and Abby fought inside the pizzeria against William Afton inside a spring lock suit. They succeed in killing Afton with the help of the animatronics.
Abby built a unique relationship with Freddy and friends because they are the souls of children murdered by Afton.
This relationship remained at the end of the film and is picked back up in the sequel.
Plot

“Anyone can survive five nights. This time, there will be no second chances,” says a tagline from the film.
Scott Cawthon is once again the main creative force behind the film and the entire lore of this series from video games to the present.
However, Five Nights at Freddy’s has always been an interesting series because fans are heavily invested in the series lore to the point where many theories have intertwined with official cannon.
This sequel will pick up where the first film left off and introduce more lore, which dates to the original location in the 80s.
Paranormal investigators will be looking into Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria as there have been many experiences and folklore built around the long-closed business.
Mike is brought back into the fold when Abby disappears after being lured away to join her animatronic friends.
Cast
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has familiar faces from the first film and some fresh ones playing new characters in this sequel.
The cast includes a reunion of two 90s horror kings, a beloved YouTuber in the FNAF community and Megan Fox. Let’s breakdown this eclectic list of actors.
Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt
Mike is a security guard from the video game without much characterization, so he is given a sister and more backstory in the film series.
Hutcherson, who has been acting since childhood, brings the character to life with a passion that not many actors would bring to a video game adaptation.
One of my favorite parts of the first film was Mike and his relationship with his sister Abby, and this is mostly thanks to the actor’s authentic dedication.
For Hutcherson, this isn’t just a paycheck, and he genuinely cares about the series and the fans.
Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa
In the first film, Vanessa was revealed to be the daughter of villain Willian Afton.
The actress has worked in television on shows You, Once Upon a Time and Gossip Girl (2021).
Vanessa Shelly-Afton was a local police officer in the first film who helped Mike and Abby because she felt partially responsible for her father’s evil doings.
In the sequel, she has fully joined their side as they must face off against the animatronics together as a sort of adoptive family.
Matthew Lillard as William Afton
William Afton AKA Steve Raglan AKA The Yellow Rabbit is played by horror veteran actor Matthew Lillard.
Lillard is a genre favorite for his roles in Scream, Scooby-Doo and Thirteen Ghosts.
Afton, also known as The Purple Guy in the video games, is very important to the mythology of the series.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Lillard continues this role and the level of evil and camp he brings to the performance.
The actor reprised his iconic role as Stu Macher for Scream 7.
Skeet Ulrich as Henry Emily
Skeet Ulrich and Mattew Lillard are together again in a film for the first time since their killer roles in the original Scream.
Henry Emily is the father of one of Afton’s victims and is looking for answers. Another important aspect of the character is that he is a partner with Afton in Freddy’s Pizzeria.
In the game series, he plays an important role as the “cassette man” who passes instructions along to security guards and in turn the players of the games.
It’s exciting to see these scream kings in action together again all these years later.
Mckenna Grace as Lisa & Teo Briones as Alex
Mckenna Grace played many roles where she was the younger version of a character.
Her notable roles include The Haunting of Hill House, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Teo Briones has a shorter resume but is well-known for his horror roles. This includes the Chucky TV series and Final Destination Bloodlines.
These two will play smaller roles as paranormal investigators looking into Freddy’s Pizzeria.
Megan Fox as the voice of Toy Chica
Megan Fox isn’t a stranger to the horror genre. She has her cult-favorite role as Jennifer Check in Jennifer’s Body as well as recent film Til Death.
This isn’t the actresses first time playing a technological character as she was recently an android in the film Subservience.
The voicework choices in this new film are fun, and we’ll see if that whimsy can translate to a solid performance.
Fox often doesn’t get credit for her acting prowess, and I think her voice and persona is perfect for Toy Chica.
Matthew “MatPat” Patrick as the voice of Toy Bonnie
MatPat established the YouTube channel “The Game Theorists,” which feature theories about the video game’s lore.
The channel would eventually expand beyond video games, but it got much of its humbling beginnings covering the expansive Five Nights at Freddy’s lore.
Five Night at Freddy’s success came from an intense fan interest going all the way back to the indie game’s initial release.
The dedicated fan base of FNAF was powered by MatPat’s extensive theories, as well as the “Let’s Play” community.
MatPat made a cameo appearance in the first film with one line of dialogue as a waiter in a scene, which excited very many fans.
Other YouTube creators appeared in the first film, and many fans had hoped for an appearance by one of the most popular gamers who played Five Nights at Freddy’s, Markiplier.
Reaction
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was not received positively by critics, but audiences and fans of the franchise celebrated its release.
The film sits at 12% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes but it’s 88% with audience reviews.
In its opening weekend, the film topped the box office with $63 million domestically, according to Deadline.
This number broke a number of records and is quite rare for a horror film in December, even though it’s lower than the first film’s debut.
These box office records broken include:
- Best opening for a horror movie in December.
- Second best opening for a horror movie in 2025.
- The biggest opening for a post-Thanksgiving weekend release.
- Universal Studio’s best December opening ever.
- Joins It films as the only two horror franchises to have their first two parts in the top 10 all-time domestic horror openings.
Video Game Source Material
The lore for FNAF is further developed in published books, which are tie-ins to the world of the video games.
Franchise creator Scott Cawthon has remained consistent in producing stories in the universe since 2014.
Listed below are the video games to play as a starting point for entering the universe outside of the films.
- Five Nights at Freddy’s (2014)
- Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (2014)
- Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 (2015)
- Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 (2015)
- Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location (2016)
- Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach (2021)
- Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic (2025)
What’s Next?
Undoubtedly, the series will return with a third film if its first weekend numbers are any indication of success.
As with most horror movies, these films have a small budget, and FNAF even has a dedicated fan base Blumhouse can count on to show up.
For the next film, they should return to a Halloween-adjacent release to maximize the film’s possibility for profit.
Cawthon and Blumhouse will most likely remain involved and continue adapting his complicated mythology to the big screen.
Fans can see Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in theaters now and afterwards join the online speculation.
Just like a jump scare, this series will most likely pop back out at audiences at some point in the future.
