South Park Creator Vows ‘Not To Be CNN’

‘Satirising the preposterous’.

Since President Donald J. Trump’s unlikely rise to presidency, comedians, late night hosts, and TV shows alike have benefited from Trump’s childish and unsophisticated behavior (including South Park).

However, South park creator Trey Parker has recently expressed disinterest in moving forward with Trump related humor. Here’s his take:

Yeah, and it’s also just gotten boring. We weren’t ever really that show. We would do an entire season and there would be one moment that played off something that had just happened and people would go, “ ‘South Park’ is the show that does that.” And that’s just not true. We’re not.

We did start to become that, though, especially the last season. We fell into the same trap that “Saturday Night Live” fell into, where it was like, “Dude, we’re just becoming CNN now. We’re becoming: ‘Tune in to see what we’re going to say about Trump.’ ” Matt and I hated it but we got stuck in it somehow.

This season I want to get back to Cartman dressing up like a robot and [screwing] with Butters, because to me that’s the bread and butter of “South Park”: kids being kids and being ridiculous and outrageous but not “did you see what Trump did last night?” Because I don’t give a … anymore.

We probably could put up billboards — “Look what we’re going to do to Trump next week!” — and get crazy ratings. But I just don’t care.

Unfortunately, this revelation comes as a major disappointment to South Park fans still grieving over the U.S. election. Although just a cartoon, South park serves as an important comical tool, as the show’s intellect and wit often accurately depict American society, and sensible suggestions moving forward. Older fans may remember the unforgettable ‘Osama Bin Laden has farty pants’ episode. This episode cleverly targeted American fears and actions following the terrorist attacks on the world trade center. For many, this was a much needed episode in a time that demanded a brighter outlook on things. More importantly, this gave Americans insight into the state of their country, world views, and ways to overcome such tragedy.

The Point is: For many, Donald Trump’s election was something unfathomable; the undesired result of a new world order. Now, Americans must live in what they believe to be a ‘totalitarian state’, while slowly accepting their dystopian future. All said, they could use a good laugh that satirizes the current President.

Unfortunately, South Park will not be there this time.
