Britney Spears has announced she is “taking a break” from social media, following her engagement with her boyfriend Sam Asghari.

The singer has caused some fan confusion as throughout the battle over Spears’ conservatorship fans have been dependent on turning to the singer’s Instagram account for updates over her well-being.

Britney’s sudden Instagram deletion has a lot of fans concerned, initially leading some to believe it had been deactivated.

But Spears later clarified that she had deleted the account herself.

Britney’s Instagram account has long been a focus in the battle over her conservatorship, a complex legal agreement she was placed under since 2008. The agreement put her father Jamie Spears in charge of her finances, healthcare, and other major decisions in the singer’s life.

The deletion came shortly after her father agreed to step down as her conservator. The final post on Spear’s Instagram was of an article titled ‘Infusing Education with heart’ which featured an Oscar Wilde quote.

Spears captioned the post:

“Growing up in a world where basically almost everything I did was controlled by someone else…I hope this message gets to people who have been confused or manipulated by a system!”

Some fans have speculated that the account was suspended by Instagram due to the nature of the final post.

However, the social media network confirmed to Insider that Britney’s account was deactivated by her, and not suspended by the company.

A representative for Instagram’s parent company Facebook said:

“There are a number of reasons why a post or account may no longer be accessible from its prior URL, including for example if the person deleted their account.”

Her Instagram hiatus comes just days after her father, Jamie Spears unexpectedly filed a petition to terminate the legal arrangement.

More recently in a public hearing, Spears believed her conservatorship was “abusive” and has been voicing more frequently her support for the #FreeBritney movement.

Though it’s not been unusual for celebrities to take some time away from social media fans have been insisting this was simply not Britney’s own action.

As Britney Spears has battled secretly to gain back control of her life, Britney began to post more candidly on Instagram, sharing criticisms of her father and sister in a recent caption:

“My so-called support system hurt me deeply.”

The singer’s Instagram has played a vital role in the evolution of the #Free Britney Movement. For many fans, Spears’ posts were an integral window into understanding how much Britney’s own social media was under the thumb of the conservatorship.

Notably, the #Free Britney movement started with two fans Tess Barker and Barbara Grey launching the Britney’s Gram podcast in November 2017, to discuss the singer’s social media.

Spears’ attorney Matthew Rosengart has confirmed separately to Page Six that it was his client’s choice to take a social-media break. An insider affirmed:

“She’s in a great place and silence can be a powerful thing and a powerful message.”

The singer is choosing to take some time away from:

“social media in light of the successful path that she’s been on and continues to be on.”

Here’s to hoping Britney makes the most of her time offline and has a wonderful time celebrating her engagement while she’s at it!
