Ah, the dystopian era. Most people think that this era was the peak of YA writing, largely because many people could relate to the characters. Between The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, and Shatter Me, the 2010s dystopian era was one to remember. Among these popular series was the equally popular Divergent series, which had an ending that left many fans upset. Now, with the announcement of a new duology, fans are asking what the duology is about and whether it is necessary.
On April 18, 2026, at BookCon, Veronica Roth announced her upcoming duology titled The Sixth Faction. Diehard fans of the series are equal parts excited and wary of disappointment. Will the duology bring a fresh perspective to the story, or is it a meaningless cash grab?
Fans have more questions too. Will the characters be different Will their personalities change? How faithful will these books to be to the original? Based on the synopsis, it seems like the duology is leaning more toward a retelling: a unique approach that will make for an interesting addition to the Divergent world.
So, what is The Sixth Faction about?
I will say, I don’t see many dystopian era authors taking a risk like this. For example, The Hunger Games spinoffs explore characters’ backstories, rather than telling the story differently. Additionally, some authors or creators will introduce sequels to the original series, with one example being the Star Wars sequels that focused on the era after Luke Skywalker defeated Darth Vader. Another popular technique is telling the story again, but through another character’s point of view. Roth did this with her book Four; even though it was mostly backstory, it still dove into aspects of the original series.
The Sixth Faction is distinct from any of the examples I provided above, as it is a retelling of the original series. I’m curious if Roth is attempting to fix the ending of the original trilogy, since it faced a lot of backlash, specifically surrounding Tris’ death. This ending was out of the ordinary at the time, and fans were left shocked. No one suspected that the story would end so tragically, and it hit extra hard because it occurred in a side plot that was quite forgettable.
One thing that makes Divergent enjoyable as a dystopian era book is the characters. Their backstories and motives reflect real issues that affect our world today. One of the biggest questions fans have about the new duology is how the characters will be presented. I also think it’ll be interesting to see if Roth will add more characters and how they’ll tie into the plot of the story.
The synopsis.… so far
So far, all we have to go off of is a short synopsis on Amazon and other similar sites that really doesn’t give us a lot of information. Here is a brief summary: Tris wants to leave Abnegation for Dauntless, and she even has a plan to do so. Unfortunately, a tragic event changes everything. She is thrown into the path of a rebellion and encounters a mysterious boy with an even more mysterious name.
Ok, so far, the story starts off on the same foot. We have Tris wanting to leave Abnegation for Dauntless. That tracks with the OG book. However, things start to change from there. Some sort of tragedy, we don’t know what yet, happens at the Choosing Ceremony. There is speculation that the rebellion has something to do with this plot point, perhaps by planting a bomb or causing another form of disruption; however, it is also possible that the rebellion won’t be introduced until later in the book. Fans have been speculating whether Tris will choose something other than Dauntless or whether big event occurs after she chooses Dauntless. Additionally, many fans think that Four’s importance to the story will be downplayed, with him only being seen as a love interest.
There is one thing that the synopsis did not mention: the original villain of the OG trilogy, Jeanine Matthews. Of course, some synopses do not include the villain’s identity in order to surprise readers with a plot twist. Jeanine Matthews is likely to return if The Sixth Faction incorporate most of the elements from Divergent. Or Roth is saving a new villain to really throw the fans for a loop. Whatever the reason, the vague synopsis, while not giving out a lot of information, is inciting more engagement as fans guess what direction the story will take us.
Will The Sixth Faction have some familiar faces?
Fans are eager to know which characters will grace the pages of the newest book. Will there be any new characters? Tris and Four will undoubtedly be present, as they are on the cover of the book and are the main characters of Divergent. Evelyn Johnson-Eaton is sure to appear, as she contributes to the rebellion in the original Divergent series and an integral part of the story. Other supporting characters may also be mentioned, but their relevance to the story remains to be seen.
Another character guaranteed to make an appearance is Peter. In the original series, Peter is introduced as the first “villain” before Jeanine Matthews. As the stories progress, he becomes a more morally gray character, which is vital for a story that goes beyond good vs. evil.
Christina, Tris’s first friend in Dauntless, is another important character in the story, although her dynamic with Tris will change for several reasons. In the original book, they meet through Dauntless, but if Tris doesn’t make it there, they will have to meet in a different way. For example, maybe Christina will meet Tris through the factionless or through Four. However, Christina and Tris also bonded through their shared experiences during the Dauntless training. How will that connection develop if Tris never makes it to Dauntless? Altering beloved characters in a well-known story is always risky, though sometimes bigger risks lead to greater rewards.
Adding new characters: good or bad?
I’ve already brought up the possibility of adding new characters to the story. There are pros and cons to this. On one hand, new faces could help replace the ones that may be missing. On the other hand, replacing beloved characters with unfamiliar ones could prove disappointing.
Adding new characters could attract new fans. Stranger Things witnessed a huge explosion in their fanbase with the introduction of Eddie Munson. Such additions can expand the universe and show different sides of the main characters as they interact with newbies. Plus, new characters can lead to more storylines and spin-offs, especially if Veronica Roth decides she wants to go the Hunger Games route and write books based on secondary characters like President Snow and Haymitch.
Now, the negatives. New characters could mean replacing old characters. This might upset fans, since their favorite characters might not be in the story anymore. These new characters could also end up being poorly written, which makes the books less enjoyable. It might also get too chaotic with way too many characters to keep track of (looking at you, Game of Thrones). When it comes to characters, there will always be risks, especially if you’re rewriting characters that an entire generation loves. However, if done properly, Roth can expand her fanbase to the younger generation, bringing in more readers and money.
My personal opinion on The Sixth Faction
I’m not going to lie; a new Divergent book/duology was the last thing I thought was going to happen. And quite honestly, I don’t believe The Sixth Faction is necessary. It feels like a cheap ploy to milk more money out of a franchise and correct mistakes from the previous books. Additionally, it feels like this is just going to be a sad fan fiction.
It’s like she’s trying to do what Suzanne Collins is with the Hunger Games, except it’s working for Collins. The way she does it, she is continuously expanding the universe her story is set in. Unfortunately for Roth, a remake isn’t exactly the story-building/world-expanding she thinks it is. You could probably find a story with a similar concept on Wattpad, AO3, or something.
If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m not a huge fan of this announcement. However, I will still read the books, because I am curious to see how this will change the world of Divergent. Looking at it from that angle, I think if done properly, The Sixth Faction will let us explore more of this dystopian world; however, I think it is a few years too late.
What about everyone else?
Divergent fans have been gathering on TikTok and Reddit to discuss the new release, and so far, opinions are mixed. Some are in favor, while others are unsure. The latter group fears that this is a money-making scheme and that it will sacrifice the vibes of the original story. They are equally nervous about the characters and whether or not main characters will be pushed off to the side. Conversely, a lot of people are excited that it’s not a prequel and that it will read as more of a what-if. They see the duology as an exciting step for the Divergent series, restoring its relevance amidst current sci-fi books.
When it comes to the latest book releases, #BookTok creators always jump at the chance to share their thoughts. These creators hold a lot of sway over public opinion, so it is important that Roth and her team consider their feedback. As long as Roth doesn’t succumb to the copy-paste style that has become popular on #BookTok, her writing should feel like a breath of fresh air.
Public opinion is important. Right now, I’d say the announcement of The Sixth Faction is going over pretty well. It is reaching the #BookTok creators and is the topic of many subreddits and Facebook groups. By looking at reviews across platforms, one can estimate how much support the book will receive once it is released. Fans are crossing their fingers that the book will not involve AI. Multiple books that have been released recently feel like sad ChatGPT prompts turned into stories. However, the fans have faith that Roth won’t let them down when it comes to AI in books.
Regardless of whether it’s AI, a sad fan fiction, a meaningless cash grab, or an effort to fix past mistakes, this is a bold move for Veronica Roth. No matter where you stand, I encourage you to read the book and share your thoughts. It could be exactly what we expect or something completely new. I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
