The abstract sculpture was conceived by artist Salvatore Garau as a rumination on the absence of a structure to engage in the powers of our own individual imagination to inhabit the space.
The invisible sculpture was purchased by a buyer for a cool and airy $18,000, however, the ownership itself is also a product of intangibility as collectors receive a digital certificate for the art in the form of a Non-fungible token (NFT). NFT’s are growing in popularity amongst the purchasing of artwork as they provide the commodity but in digital form rather than a physical transaction for the owner to display works of art. The collector also receives exclusive ownership rights to the piece.
Comprised of a geometric shape, marked upon a section of ground, Salvatore created a vacant area of air and space as a provocation of imagination in the absence of a tangible structure. Entitled ‘Io sono’, ‘I am’ in the native tongue of the Italian artist who defends the nothingness of the space, this short video offers further insight into the intentions of the piece.
In defence of the artwork Garau told Diario As:
“The void is nothing more than a space full of energy, and although we empty it and there is nothing left, according to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, that nothing has a weight. Therefore, it has energy that condenses and transforms into particles, that is, in us.”
“When I decide to ‘exhibit’ an immaterial sculpture in a given space, that space will concentrate a certain amount and density of thoughts at a precise point, creating a sculpture that from my title will only take the most varied forms. After all, don’t we shape a God we’ve never seen?” he adds.

The intentions behind the piece of abstract art is interesting in terms of the concept of what is or is not art, does it have to be physical, tangible or can it exist by provocation alone or in digital form? But there is speculation surrounding the person buying it in whether he has been silly to purchase something at such a high value when it does not necessarily exist. What are your thoughts?
