LEGO Pledges $4m to Racial Inequality Education

Building something new.

Civil unrest following the death of George Floyd in the United States has led to protests all over the world regarding police brutality and racism.  And some brands have been called on to make statements regarding these issues.

It is not unusual for brands and companies to make statements on social issues.  Over these past two weeks, social media has been flooded with messages from celebrities and various other public entities.  The messages have been overwhelmingly in support of social change and the Black lives Matter movement.

However, it may come as a surprise that even LEGO has stepped up to the plate.  On their Instagram page, LEGO posted in support of “the black community against racism and inequality”.  Then, they pledged $4 million to organisations “dedicated to supporting black children and educating all children about racial inequality”.

The comments on LEGO’s most recent Instagram post are largely positive and encouraging.  One commenter, Jessica Ewud (@ragzyart), commented:

I’ve never been more proud to be a @lego artist. A lot of companies are posting about inequality but aren’t making the donation to back it up. This is absolutely wonderful ???

On their “About Us” page, LEGO claims that they champion the “power of play as a key enabler in supporting children to develop and thrive in a complex and challenging world”. Moreover, the company has stopped advertising their police-related building kits.
