A British couple posted a photo which, on the surface, seemed like a direct violation of social distancing this past weekend that pissed everyone off on the internet. But it turns out the situation is more complicated than it seems.
Ever since the Coronavirus hit, the world’s been in a state of lock-down which has slowly but surely driven us all insane. It has also forced everyone to be even more online than they already were. All of this has led to a perfect storm of this ‘isolation party’.
Ellie Morley and Simon Evans posted a photo of themselves partying hard onto the “Isolation Nation Facebook Group” with dozens of people crowded in their home drinking, chatting and being well within six feet of each other. This Facebook group has over 14,000 members and is focused on having discussions, ideas and creative sharing over how to get through this crisis. So when people online saw this image they started to freak out… Until they looked closer.
Turns out, the image is photoshopped! And all the other “people” are just different versions of themselves in a variety of outfits. The whole thing was just a fun and creative little project to lighten everyone’s spirits. Luckily, all the initial pitchfork-wielding outrage subsided once people really looked at the pic.
Some commentators were quick to condemn the couple before noticing the trickery, with one saying “”What part of social distancing don’t you get?”. But after a while and some perspective that same person added “Lmao I just realised it’s all photoshopped. Awesome.”
All and all, this little art piece didn’t take that long to make according to Ellie herself who claimed “The photo took an hour to shoot and five hours to edit.” The lesson here is, don’t be quick to scold people online before you fully understand the situation. And, more importantly, if you’re really bored on quarantine then maybe you should try trolling dumb people on the internet with Photoshop. Or maybe instead of all that you should just sit back and play some video games, but you’ll want to learn all the pro strategies first.
