Coronavirus Quarantine Leads to 50% Increase in U.S. Divorce Rate

An unexpected side-effect of an international pandemic – divorce.

It’s a couch potato’s paradise: lots of snacks, binge-watching, and comfy clothes. Quarantine is the perfect excuse to hide away from society and take some time for R&R. But is staying home to practice social distancing actually causing relationship problems and leading to divorce?

According to a source on sickchirpse.com, the U.S. divorce rate increased by 50% in the past few weeks. This may be because bored, annoyed, financially stressed individuals are spending more and more time with their spouses. More fights emerge, and people have no way to distance themselves.

A staggering estimation proposes that the rate of wealthy divorces will increase substantially. A wealthy divorce occurs when the richer spouse files during a period where their net worth drops. With the failure of the stock market and drastic economic hits, concentrated wealth is way down. The divorcer wants to minimize the amount paid in the settlement, using this economic decline as the time to slip out of marriage.

What does this mean for American society? It means more broken homes, more split assets, and more singles in your area. It also means greater success for attorneys who specialize in divorce and family law.

While I have to question the merits of this research, it is a compelling read. Divorce rates may or may not be increasing with the drive toward self-quarantine. Either way, my take-away is this: during your time at home, try not to be a jerk.
