New scientific research suggests that our brains may continue to functionafter death. Even after flatlining, even after one has lost the ability to move, consciousness may still be possible. And that consciousness is fully aware that death has occurred.
It is impossible to do research on this subject with truly dead people. Fortunately, there are people who have been pronounced briefly dead and have miraculously been brought back to life. These are the kinds of people who are being interviewed by the medical community that is researching consciousness after death. According to this LadBible article, Dr Sam Parnia is spearheading this research. He is studying instances of consciousness after cardiac arrest. In talks with LiveScience, Parnia has stated:
“[Patients will] describe watching doctors and nurses working, they’ll describe having awareness of full conversations, of visual things that were going on, that would otherwise not be known to them.”
Traditionally, a patient is pronounced dead when their heart stops beating. However, this new research leads to questioning if that definition of “dead” remains the most appropriate one. Dr Parnia’s research is more focused on how to better the process of resuscitation. And if consciousness continues after death, what is its exact timeframe?
