Unless you’re living under a rock, you probably already know that forest fires have been blazing through the Amazonian forest in Brazil for several weeks. This is not exactly good news, because the Amazonian forest produces 20% of the world’s oxygen and removes 14% of its carbon dioxide. Thankfully, there are a few ways that you can help.

Make a Donation

Organizations like Rainforest Trust, Rainforest Alliance, and the Arbor Day Foundation contribute to the preservation of tropical forests. They also invest in reforestation projects.

Use Certified Products

Many items that we use today begin in nature, so make sure that you are using goods that have been certified by the Rainforest Alliance, ensuring that the good was made without endangering the forest. When buying wood, make sure it’s marked with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label, which means that the wood was collected using the highest ecological, social, and economic standard.

Cut Beef Out of Your Diet

Cutting beef out of your diet is a great way to take action in reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. According to the Rainforest Alliance, “livestock farming is one of the main causes of deforestation.”

Sign the Petition

Change.org has a petition that urges Brazilian authorities “to open an investigation to determine the causes of the increase in fires in this region and to hold the perpetrators accountable”. The petition is called “Stop the burning of the Amazon rainforest”, and it already has over 2 million signatures.
