In some areas in China, people will get a warning when calling the “laolai.” The coercive Social Credit System which has been in the works since 2014 keeps on expanding its impact on the population’s life.

China’s Social Credit System, can affect anyone who has a low score.

According to Konbini, “the system had declined 17,5 million flights and 5,5 million train rides. The debtors can no longer rent apartments using their name and are facing great difficulties to find (and keep) a job.”

By 2020, China plans to implement it into the system for good. Until then, the government is testing a way to identify falters in some regions: a china’s ringtone of shame and a warning message.

Now whenever one wants to call someone they will instead hear a ring tone of a police siren, and then someone saying a specific message.
