“He sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth.” – Kara Zor-El.
Dust off your capes and get ready for a new face of hope and power as DC fans eagerly await the release of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Comic book fans are thrilled to see some new faces being introduced to the big screen on June 26, 2026.
This movie may not follow the exact storyline of the DC Comics, but it will be helpful to get some background information on the new characters we will be seeing. Not really a comic book reader? Not a problem! This article will cover some key information about a few of the confirmed comic book characters that will make an appearance on the big screen!
Kara Zor-El
Kara Zor-El (aka Supergirl), played by Milly Alcock in the live-action Supergirl: Women of Tomorrow, made her first appearance in Action Comics #252, written by Otto Binder in 1959. Kara Zor-El was born on Krypton. Does that name sound familiar? That’s right! Supergirl was born on the same planet as Superman (David Corenswet). Not only is Kara originally from the same planet as Superman, but she is also his cousin.
While Supergirl may share a similar symbol and color palette to Superman, the two characters could not be more different.
Kara is first introduced in Action Comics #252. Superman is shocked to find out he has any blood relatives still alive. Kara reveals to him that after Krypton was destroyed, some Kryptonians managed to survive after a protective barrier encased her home in Argo City.
The force field that protected Argo City eventually fails, forcing Kara to escape to Earth and leave behind all of her friends and family.
Superman was only a baby when he was sent to Earth. He was raised by a loving family that helped him adapt and fit into a whole new environment. Kara, on the other hand, fled the dying planet of Krypton when she was a teenager, and she struggled to adjust to the changes.
This distinction from Supergirl’s upbringing versus Superman’s upbringing is what sets the tone of the type of character the viewers will see in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Supergirl does not have the same hope that Superman manages to have; she is pessimistic and skeptical of the world.
This negative view of the world results in Supergirl living a careless life. The trailer displays Supergirl traveling to other planets with red suns. Planets that contain a red sun allow her to get drunk (Supergirl and Superman are indestructible on Earth due to the powers that the yellow sun provides, so alcohol does not normally affect them). There are planets in the galaxy that have a red sun, so their abilities are weakened, allowing Supergirl to get intoxicated.
Supergirl’s Cameo in Superman
The fans had the chance to see the partying and carefree Supergirl in the end credits scene of Superman, which came out in July 2025. Supergirl stumbles into Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, and in her drunken state, she is happily greeted by her superpowered dog, Krypto.
The fans discovered throughout the Superman film that Krypto could probably use a dog trainer, as he was constantly causing mischief for Superman and anyone who dared to get in his way.
The fandom grew to love Krypto in the Superman film, and many are eager to see Krypto make another appearance as Supergirl’s loyal companion throughout the anticipated film.
Krypto made his first appearance in the DC Adventure Comics #210, written in 1938. In this comic, a ship crashes on Earth and Superboy discovers the mischievous Kryptonian dog.
The film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, takes a different approach with Krypto’s backstory. Instead of Superboy discovering Krypto on Earth, Supergirl is his caretaker, and he is her partner throughout the film. Supergirl grew up with Krypto; he is the only connection that Supergirl has left to her destroyed home, so she cherishes their bond and will go to great lengths to protect Krypto.
Supergirl is not interested in being the hero and living in the shadows of her cousin, Superman. Though Supergirl’s plans change as she is faced with a new challenge, one that motivates her out of her slump, and she joins forces with a young girl, Ruthye Marye Knoll.
Ruthye Marye Knoll

Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley) first makes her appearance in the DC Comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1, written by Tom King, which was published in June 2021. This upcoming movie will be Ruthie’s first on-screen debut, so it is not surprising that many people may not have heard of this character.
Ruthye grew up on a planet that revolved around farming, and this planet just so happens to have a red sun. Ruthye lived with her mother, father, and brothers on their family’s farm. One day, a traveler by the name of Krem of the Yellow Hills seeks refuge. Ruthye’s father, Elias Knoll, agrees and offers Krem shelter at his farm.
This act of kindness results in Ruthye’s father being murdered by Krem of the Yellow Hills (played by Matthias Schoenaerts). Ruthye is devastated as she finds her father dead. Lying beside him is Krem’s sword.
She is stricken with vengeance, and, wielding the sword that Krem left behind with her father’s body, she sets out on her journey for revenge. Ruthye stumbles upon Supergirl at a tavern while she is out searching for a warrior who could assist her mission.
Supergirl is hesitant to assist Ruthye at first, but the two girls slowly find they have more in common than they realize.
Krem of the Yellow Hills
Krem of the Yellow Hills was first introduced in DC Comics Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1, which is the same comic book that introduced Ruthye Marye Knoll.
He is a ruthless pirate and an assassin who roams around the universe causing mayhem. He is a highly skilled swordsman and archer. Although Krem does not possess true superpowers, he does have access to magic weapons.
When Krem stumbles upon Ruthye’s hometown planet, he seeks refuge at Elias Knoll’s farm. Ruthye and her family did not realize that Krem was sent by the King to determine who was not loyal to him. What starts off as a normal conversation about the King, devolves into an argument between Krem and Ruthye’s father. The interaction ends with Krem killing Elias.
Krem flees the farm, leaving behind the sword he used to kill Ruthye’s father. Which Ruthye will eventually discover and use as her weapon to seek revenge.
Krem of the Yellow Hills eventually discovers Supergirl, Ruthye, and Krypto and attacks them. Supergirl is at a weakened state due to her powers not being present because of the red sun. After his attack, Krem flees the scene by stealing Supergirl’s ship. This interaction sets Supergirl on course to assist Ruthye in getting revenge on Krem of the Yellow Hills.
Lobo

Lobo (Jason Momoa) was first introduced in June 1983 from the DC Comic Omega Men #3, which was written by Roger Slifer. Lobo is a Czarnian alien, the last of his race.
Czarnia was always known as a paradise planet, they never had wars occurring and it was always peaceful. Until Lobo was born and committed mass genocide on his people, wiping out the Czarnian race.
Lobo is immortal with superhuman strength, regeneration abilities, thermal immunity (he can travel through extreme heat or cold), and he has enhanced senses such as smell and hearing.
He is an intergalactic bounty hunter who works for whoever pays him the highest amount. In past DC comics, he has been hired by countless people throughout the galaxy, ranging from agents working in the Citadel to Amanda Waller hiring him to assist with the Suicide Squad.
Lobo was not featured in DC Comics’ Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but the writer, Tom King, stated that he originally intended for Lobo to have a role in the comic. Lobo was ultimately cut from the final production. So, the decision to add Lobo into the upcoming movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will pay tribute to the original idea.
Many DC fans are questioning how Lobo will fit into this movie’s storyline, but many people are excited to see Jason Momoa return to the DC universe. Jason Momoa played Aquaman in 2018, and many fans believe that he is more fit for the role of Lobo and will do the character justice when bringing him to the big screen.
Supergirl Brings the Inspiration That We All Need

Now that we have brushed up on our comic book knowledge, we are better prepared to see some of the new faces that are set to appear in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Supergirl represents the hope that we all need, even in the face of challenges when life seems too overwhelming. Although she is not the perfect textbook superhero (like the persona her cousin displays), she shows the world an honest depiction of grief, justice, and hope for a better future.
Be sure to catch Kara Zor-El in action in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, premiering July 26, 2026.

This was well researched. My favorite part about Kara is how funny it is when Kal rebuffs her romantic advances.
As Supergirl, she has a little crush, and as Powergirl she straight up wants to mate to continue their species.
