In March of 2026, bestselling author CG Drews released their latest novel, You Did Nothing Wrong.

The book is Drews’s debut venture into adult fiction, though they have also written several award-winning YA novels. Their most successful include Don’t Let the Forest In and The Boy Who Steals Houses.

With their immensely popular YA novels setting high expectations, let’s talk about whether Drews has managed to deliver the same enthralling, twisted storyline readers know and love.

The Story

You Did Nothing Wrong follows the outwardly perfect life of young mother Elodie after she moves to the US with her neurodivergent son, Jude.

With a hopelessly devoted new husband, Bren, and another baby on the way, Elodie believes all her problems are solved. But then Jude claims to hear voices in the walls, and Elodie can’t seem to shake the feeling that something about her picturesque life is very, very wrong.

As Jude’s terror intensifies, the fragile family bonds between the trio begin to crumble. With her relationships on the line, Elodie must confront her ghosts and question whether the problem was ever really the house, or whether it was her all along.

Prose

There were so many elements of this book that I absolutely adored, including Drews’s characteristically chilling writing style.

“The dark is a formless thing and when she edges around a corner, it opens before her like an unholy mouth ready to suck all the air from her lungs.”

CG Drews

Drews’s prose completely immerses readers in a scene. From the beginning, they deliver a dark, atmospheric description of Elodie’s new home, evoking a creeping sense of foreboding. My interest was piqued by the vague hints that the old house was hiding something. Moreover, the sense that Elodie’s family was on the precipice of disaster kept my eyes glued to the page.

Drews also introduces us to Elodie’s unusual conception of motherhood early on in the novel.

“If Jude is an oil spill, uncontrollable, flammable, then she is a blanket meant to smother.”

CG Drews

Her obsessive descriptions of protecting Jude, which actually seem to do the opposite, expose the cracks in Elodie’s fairytale life. Immediately, we can see that the pair is struggling to meet each other’s needs. With tension in the family mounting every page, you’ll be eager to find out what happens when Elodie finally snaps.

Characters

The characters themselves were masterfully written. Elodie is incredibly complex, desperately craving her son’s love but plagued with crippling insecurities. She’s imperfect and often overwhelmed, pressuring herself to fit an idealistic image of wife and mother. But even as her perception of motherhood descends into a morbid, all-consuming obsession, the reader cannot help but empathize with her desire, however corrupted it may be, to do what’s best for Jude.

I also loved how Drews weaves subtle hints throughout the book that Bren may not be as perfect as Elodie believes him to be. His carefully masked desire to control her and render her completely dependent was immediately intriguing. As the story progresses, both the reader and Elodie discover more about Bren’s true motivations. In the end, we’re right alongside her as she confronts the shocking truth of what he’s hiding.

And then there’s Jude. Drews doesn’t sugarcoat the difficult reality of parenting an undiagnosed neurodivergent child, especially as Elodie increasingly wishes for a “normal” son. With Elodie’s fear that Jude doesn’t love her, Drews delivers a heartbreaking and emotionally complex depiction of motherhood. However, they also spotlight the tender moments between the pair, crafting an unconventional yet loving depiction of a mother-son bond. As the beating heart of You Did Nothing Wrong, this tumultuous relationship was beautiful, poignantly realistic, and absolutely enthralling.

Reader Engagement

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my experience as a reader.

It seemed like every page added a new layer of captivating intricacy and depth to the story. There were multiple mysteries underlying the main plot—the truth of Elodie’s tragic past, for one—and every time I thought I understood what was going on, another secret emerged.

Drews leaves a lot of the lingering gaps open for readers to ponder. While the story begins with an imperfect but mostly blissful domesticity, it picks up very quickly with the veiled introductions of almost every character hiding something. As a huge mystery lover, I was eager to see if I could figure out what, exactly, the issues in this new family were.

I was absolutely unable to put this book down, especially once I got to the second half. It’s the perfect cure for readers who have trouble finishing books; without a doubt, you’ll be dying to discover how it ends.

What didn’t quite resonate

As far as bigger critiques go, I really only had one: the ending. The story’s conclusion felt a little unsatisfying, largely because I had so many unanswered questions.

A lot of readers seem to have the same issue. As a fellow reviewer put it:

“[T]here was a bit of an overreach when it comes to how things all shook out by the end.”

Kate’s Review

I’m all for leaving mysteries up to reader interpretation. But Drews devotes a lot of time and attention to resolving familial relationships, leaving the mystery of the house very much unexplained. It also felt like most characters emotionally recovered from their traumatic encounters far too quickly. As a result, the supernatural elements read as underdeveloped.

One other minuscule issue was that Drews’s use of similes occasionally felt a little excessive. They have an elegant writing style, especially when it comes to figurative language, but at times it was simply too busy. However, I only noticed this near the beginning of the book; the similes felt less out of place as the story developed.

Despite these issues, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book. I devoured it in less than a day, and I’m already looking forward to rereading. Overall, I would give it 9/10 stars. As a dedicated CG Drews fan, I can say with certainty that it exceeded my already high expectations.

So… who should read this book?

This book is made for readers who love exploring the dark and twisted sides of human nature.

Fans of horror, psychological thrillers, and haunted-house stories will feel right at home in Elodie’s crumbling manor. They’ll adore the eerie atmosphere, Elodie’s mental deterioration, and the house’s buried secrets. And, like in many of their other novels, CG Drews masterfully incorporates biological horror.

Thus, if you’re a longtime CG Drews fan, this book will not disappoint. Drews’s writing remains highly impactful, and the story is just as terrifyingly gripping as their earlier works. Although the plot is less focused on romance than their YA novels, the relationships in You Did Nothing Wrong are still incredibly poignant and meaningful. In particular, the borderline obsessive bond between Elodie and Bren is reminiscent of Andrew and Thomas’s romance in their popular novel Don’t Let the Forest In.

Get ready to read!

Hopefully, this review inspired you to immerse yourself in Elodie’s creepy, mystifying world. With its beautiful prose and intriguing secrets, You Did Nothing Wrong is entertaining, emotional, and thrilling all at once.

But if this book isn’t what you’re looking for right now, don’t worry! Plenty of other books provide a similarly enthralling perspective on unconventional love, relationships, and human complexity.

So curl up with your novel of choice and dive in!
