For nearly a decade, fans of “Dragon Ball Super” have been waiting for the story to continue on television. The series ended its original run in 2018, leaving audiences with unanswered questions about what would happen next for Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of the Dragon Ball universe. Now, after eight long years, the legendary anime franchise appears ready to make its long-awaited return in 2026.

For one of the most influential anime franchises in history, the absence of a weekly anime series created massive anticipation across the fandom. While the anime paused, the Dragon Ball brand continued evolving through films, manga arcs, and new projects that kept the story alive while fans waited for the next chapter.

When Dragon Ball Super concluded in March 2018, it ended with the massive “Universe Survival Saga,” one of the most ambitious arcs in the franchise’s history. However, the story itself did not end there. The manga continued publishing new arcs, expanding the universe beyond what the anime had adapted.

This left fans in a strange position: the story was still moving forward in print, but there was no anime adaptation to bring those moments to the screen.

Several factors contributed to the hiatus. Production schedules, the success of theatrical films, and shifting priorities within the franchise meant the studio did not immediately produce new episodes. Additionally, the passing of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama in 2024 created a moment of reflection for the franchise and its future direction.

Even without a weekly anime series, the Dragon Ball community remained incredibly active. Fans continued discussing theories, revisiting classic arcs, and creating their own tributes to the franchise. Projects like Legend: A Dragon Ball Tale show just how strong the fanbase still is, with creators spending years producing a high-quality animated short inspired by the world of Dragon Ball. The project gained major attention online for its animation and storytelling, demonstrating how the series continues to inspire artists and fans across the globe even during long gaps between official releases.

The movies that kept Dragon Ball alive

Two major films helped maintain excitement for the franchise during the anime’s hiatus: Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

Released in 2018, Broly reintroduced one of the most popular characters in Dragon Ball history and officially made him part of the series’ canon storyline. The film was a massive global success and demonstrated that Dragon Ball still had an enormous cultural impact decades after its original debut.

Four years later, Super Hero shifted the focus toward characters like Gohan and Piccolo while expanding the world of Dragon Ball beyond Goku and Vegeta. Both films were heavily influenced by Toriyama himself, showing his continued creative involvement in the franchise.

These movies served an important role: they kept Dragon Ball visible and relevant even without a weekly anime series.

What the anime will adapt next

Although the anime ended in 2018, the story of Dragon Ball Super continued in the manga. The series was illustrated by Toyotarou and guided by Akira Toriyama, the legendary creator of Dragon Ball and one of the most influential manga artists of all time.

Toriyama’s impact on anime and manga is massive. Since Dragon Ball first began in 1984, its work has helped shape modern action anime and inspired generations of creators around the world.

After the anime stopped, the manga continued expanding the story until Toriyama’s passing in 2024. The next storyline expected to be adapted is the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc, which introduces the powerful villain Moro. The arc takes place directly after the Tournament of Power and continues the story that the anime left unfinished.

For many fans, seeing this arc animated would mark the true return of Dragon Ball Super and continue the legacy of one of the most important creators in manga history.

The legacy of Dragon Ball’s influence

Long before the modern anime boom, Dragon Ballhelped establish the foundation for the action-adventure genre that dominates the industry today. Since its debut in 1984, the series created by Akira Toriyama introduced storytelling elements that would later become staples of shōnen anime. Transformations, intense rivalries, escalating battles, and long-term character growth all became defining features of the genre, and many later series drew inspiration from the formula that Dragon Ball helped popularize.

The influence of “Dragon Ball Z” in particular can still be seen across modern anime. Series such as Naruto, One Piece, and My Hero Academia adopted similar storytelling ideas, including training arcs, rival characters who push the protagonist to grow stronger, and battles that test both physical strength and personal resolve. For many creators, Dragon Ball served as an early inspiration that demonstrated how action, humor, and heartfelt moments could coexist within the same story.

Beyond storytelling, the franchise also played a major role in expanding anime’s international audience. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, broadcasts of Dragon Ball Z helped introduce many viewers outside Japan to anime for the first time. Its popularity on television and home video created a global fanbase that continues to support the franchise decades later.

Even during the years without a weekly anime, that influence never disappeared. New generations of viewers continue discovering the series through streaming platforms, manga releases, and theatrical films. As a result, Dragon Ball remains one of the most recognizable anime franchises in the world, with a cultural impact that extends far beyond its original run.

Why 2026 could be a major moment for anime

The return of Dragon Ball would not just be a big event for longtime fans; it could become one of the biggest anime releases of the year.

Dragon Ball has shaped the global anime industry for decades, inspiring countless other series and helping introduce anime to international audiences. Even after more than 40 years since the original manga began, the franchise remains one of the most recognizable names in entertainment.

The eight-year wait has only increased anticipation. With new story arcs ready for adaptation and a new generation of fans discovering the series through streaming platforms, the next Dragon Ball anime could mark the beginning of a new era for the franchise.

More importantly, it will continue the legacy of Akira Toriyama, the creator whose work helped define modern anime and whose influence can still be seen across the entire medium today.

After years of waiting, the Dragon Ball universe may finally be ready to power up once again.

My name is Victor Elia Gonzaga Cabezudo or Victor Gonzaga for short. I’ve always loved stories, especially the kind that make you feel something deep, just like Akira Toriyama’s work has inspired me throughout my life. One day, I hope to write a book that does the same for many people. I’m still on my journey, but I believe everyone has a story worth telling, and this is where mine begins.
