We’ve seen a lot of popular book adaptations come to our screens in the past year. But big names, such as Frankenstein or Wuthering Heights, don’t always mean that the adaptation will be a success.
Wuthering Heights was branded as a completely different story with Emily Brontë’s title slapped over top of it. Meanwhile, Frankenstein was nominated for multiple Oscars this year.
Not every book adaptation can be as successful and well-loved as Heated Rivalry. So what exactly makes an adaptation to film worthwhile?
I was fortunate to connect with Niraj Pancholi, an award-winning writer, director, and film critic, for their thoughts on the matter of book-to-film adaptations. On this topic, Pancholi said:
“A good film adaptation is one that can accurately portray the theme and characters of the novel. Plot points can be altered or shortened, but the meaning of the story and the complexity of the characters shall not be altered or simplified for the film.”
Niraj Pancholi/Interview with Alexis Locke
For a film adaptation to strike the hearts of its viewers, writers and directors must consider how to adapt the written story into one that can make an impact on screen. It is no easy feat, but with directors such as Christopher Nolan, Francis Lawrence, and David Frankel returning to the challenge after their previous big hits, I have faith that we’ll be seeing some good adaptations for the rest of the year.
Now that Wuthering Heights has broken the ice, what other book adaptations can we look forward to this year?
Reminders of Him – Colleen Hoover

Release Date: March 13th, 2026, in theaters.
Freshly released from prison after a 5-year stint for a horrible mistake, Kenna Rowan returns to her hometown to reconnect with her 4-year-old daughter. However, everyone she once knew has shut her out, unwilling to forgive her, except for Ledger Ward, a local bar owner. The two must hide their growing relationship to maintain the community’s trust and ensure that Kenna can continue caring for her daughter.
The film is based on Hoover’s bestselling 2022 novel, and it is the third of her novels to have a movie adaptation following It Ends With Us (2024) and Regretting You (2025).
This new film will star Maika Monroe as Kenna and Tyriq Withers as Ledger. The director is Vanessa Caswill, who is most known for her work on the BBC miniseries Thirteen (2016) and the film Little Women (2017).
Due to the huge success of previous CoHo novels, we can expect to see another great turnout for Reminders of Him in March.
Project Hail Mary – Andy Weir

Release Date: March 20th, 2026, in theaters.
Dr. Ryland Grace awakes, alone, on a spaceship thousands of light-years away from Earth. With no memories of who he is, or why he’s on this ship, Ryland must battle hardships and loneliness to figure out how to save Earth—and the rest of humanity—from an extinction-level event. During his journey, he meets Rocky, an alien from another planet, trying to reach the same star system. The two must work together in a race against a ticking clock to find a safe haven for their species.
Following the success of Weir’s other novel adaptation, The Martian (2015), fans are excited to see how directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller will translate Weir’s suspenseful sci-fi onto the big screen. The two directed popular movies such as 21 Jump Street (2012) and The Lego Movie (2014).
Starring Ryan Gosling as Ryland and James Ortiz as Rocky, this movie will have fans on the edge of their seats.
Revenge Wears Prada – Lauren Weisberger

Release Date: May 1st, 2026, in theaters.
Here’s where things get tricky.
In the novel’s sequel (2014), Andy Sachs enjoys her new life writing for a high-end bridal magazine with her past-nemesis Emily as she approaches her own wedding day. But when secrets are revealed through a letter she finds, Andy must confront her past and the devil herself—Miranda Priestly, her old boss from the first book.
However, Director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna seem to want to take Revenge Wears Prada in a whole new direction, creating a sequel that is unique yet just as iconic as the original 2006 film.
The film will see returning actors Anne Hathaway as Andy and Meryl Streep as Miranda, alongside Stanley Tucci (Nigel) and Kenneth Branagh (Mr. Miranda Preistly).
Will this movie be a success? We’ll find out in May!
Verity – Colleen Hoover

Release Date: May 15th, 2026, in theaters.
Struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh is on the brink of giving up her dreams when she receives the offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, the husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, is requesting that someone finish Verity’s latest novel, which she is unable to complete herself as a result of an injury. While searching through Verity’s office for material, Lowen uncovers a chilling autobiography filled with horrifying admissions. As Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy grow, she debates whether revealing Verity’s secrets would be enough to secure a future with him.
With this being her fourth book adaptation and second film this year, Colleen Hoover is on a roll. Director Michael Showalter, co-creator and producer of the TV series Search Party (2016), will bring to life the story of Lowen, Jeremy, and of course, Verity.
Yet again, we will see Anne Hathaway appear in theaters as Verity, alongside Dakota Johnson (Lowen) and Josh Hartnett (Jeremy). Hoover’s bestselling psychological thriller will be sure to shock readers with its devious twists and mysterious characters.
The Odyssey – Homer

Release Date: July 17, 2026, in theaters.
Homer’s ancient Greek epic is renowned for its depiction of a man’s life journey. Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, must embark on a perilous, 10-year trek home after the end of the Trojan War. Using his wits and survival skills, Odysseus faces mythical monsters and angry gods to return to his wife and son.
Homer’s story has endured through time for its thrilling story and lively characters. Christopher Nolan, acclaimed for his directing work on Oppenheimer (2023), is crafting a cinematic rendering of The Odyssey, to be released this July.
Packed with A-list stars, this film features Matt Damon (Odysseus), Anne Hathaway (Penelope), and Tom Holland (Telemachus). We’ll see other big names such as Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, and many more.
This film will be one for the ages. It’s a multi-hour special that will have us sucked into the time of ancient Greece and literary masterpieces.
The Book of Magic – Alice Hoffman

Release Date: September 11, 2026, in theaters.
The lovable Owens sisters return in this sequel to the wonderfully witchy series Practical Magic. Aunt Jet, facing her upcoming death, endeavors to save a young man, spurring a multi-generational family quest to fight against a curse that keeps them from finding love. Familiar characters return, alongside new family members, in this concluding tale of family, love, and courage.
Director Susanna Bier, known for her work on Bird Box (2018) and A Better World (2010), will be adapting Hoffman’s Practical Magic series.
Practical Magic 2 will see the return of stars Nicole Kidman (Gillian Owens), Sandra Bullock (Sally Owens), as well as Stockard Channing (Aunt Franny), and Dianne Wiest (Aunt Jet). But we’ll also see some new actors for the new generation, like Joey King, Maisie Williams, and Xolo Mariduena. A perfect movie just in time for the spooky season!
Remain – Nicholas Sparks & M. Night Shyamalan

Release Date: October 23rd, 2026, in theaters.
Bestselling author Nicholas Sparks and award-winning director M. Night Shyamalan join forces in this tale of supernatural romance. Tate Donovan moves to Cape Cod to renovate his friend’s summer home, looking for a fresh start after being treated in a psychiatric facility for depression following his sister’s death. It is here that he meets Wren, and a blossoming relationship between the two ensues. But as Wren struggles with perilous emotions that threaten to break them apart, Tate must uncover her past before it’s too late.
I’m a little nervous about these two artists coming together, but Remain brings the promise of a once-in-a-lifetime project. Shyamalan has been involved in many great psychological thrillers, including The Sixth Sense (1999), The Visit (2015), and Trap (2024). The Remain film will star Jake Gyllenhaal (Tate) and Phoebe Dynevor (Wren), and it will make viewers wonder whether love can transcend the boundaries of life and death.
Sunrise on the Reaping – Suzanne Collins

Release Date: November 20th, 2026, in theaters.
24 years before the original Hunger Games trilogy, we follow Haymitch Abernathy, the only surviving District Twelve victor by the start of Katniss and Peeta’s story. Haymitch is selected to participate in the 50th Hunger Games Quarter Quell, with double the number of tributes taken from each district. Haymitch is forced to part with his lover, Lenore Dove, and his family to risk his life alongside three other tributes. But while his desire to return home alive is strong, his rebellious heart longs to fight back in more ways than one.
It is no secret that, after the latest Hunger Games novel was released in 2024, fans were waiting for a new film adaptation. In a very quick turnaround, the end of 2026 will see Francis Lawrence bringing another Hunger Games film to theaters. The film will feature many big and up-and-coming names, which were revealed to eager fans on social media last year.
Joseph Zeda will be starring as Haymitch, alongside McKenna Grace (Maysilee Donner), Whitney Peak (Lenore Dove), Jesse Plemmons (Plutarch Heavensbee), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Beetee), Maya Hawke (Wiress), Elle Fanning (Effie Trinket), Ben Wang (Wyatt Callow), and Ralph Fiennes as a middle-aged President Snow. Fans, myself included, are impatiently awaiting this heart-wrenching movie.
Dune: Messiah – Frank Herbert

Release Date: December 18th, 2026, in theaters.
In book three, we see the return of the infamous Paul Atreides 12 years later, now better known as the fear-striking, all-powerful Muad’Dib. Having become emperor of the universe, Paul must reconcile political tensions surrounding his ascension to the throne. As he settles an insider conspiracy, another threat comes from close to his heart—his lover Chani and their unborn heir to the Atreides dynasty.
In Dune: Part Three, director Dennis Villeneuve will create his final installment in the Dune movie trilogy. Since the book series has dozens of novels, it makes sense that Villeneuve would wrap up the story for one final bang.
We’ll see returning actors such as Timothee Chalamet (Paul Atreides), Zendaya (Chani), Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan), Charlotte Rampling (Gaius Helen Mohiam), Javier Bardem (Stilgar), and Ana-Taylor Joy (Alia Atreides). However, we can expect to see some new stars in the final film, such as Jason Momoa and Robert Pattinson.
Should we be nervous about these adaptations?
If handled with care, sometimes the movie or TV series can come out better than the original books. Yes, I said it! We don’t have to dread all film adaptations.
Film allows for narrative elements, angles, and representations that we can’t get from novels, and vice versa. Actors, music and sound, cinematography, wardrobe, set design, and framing transform well-loved stories into something refreshing and exciting for all viewers.
I was also able to connect with the celebrity publicist and industry strategist, Tracy Lamourie-, who is the director and founder of Lamourie Media. When it comes to our expectations for book adaptations, she says:
“Audiences don’t expect film to be an exact replica, carbon copy of the book, or at least they shouldn’t. What sophisticated audiences expect is the coherence, the same tone as the book, and obviously respect for the source material, the core material, the original story.”
Tracy Lamourie/Interview with Alexis Locke
I believe that these adaptations will have real merit. Plus, while we’re waiting for their releases, we’ll have time to check out the original story on paper.
Which book adaptation do you think will take the cake this year? My money is on Sunrise on the Reaping for sure!
