The “Nihilistic Penguin” meme has been taking over the internet, symbolizing for many burnout and the rejection of fruitless hustling.

Recently, the “Nihilistic Penguin” meme has been taking social media by storm, with many users sharing their varying interpretations of the short video clip. Does the penguin’s walk suggest giving up on a society that no longer benefits us? Does it motivate us to strive toward our dreams, no matter how out of reach they seem? Or does the video solely depict a confused penguin, nothing more?

The “Nihilistic Penguin” meme is a clip taken from Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary Encounters at the End of the World. The video itself depicts a penguin leaving his group to travel toward distant mountains. The penguin has been dubbed “nihilist” for abandoning the safety of his group and the resources offered by the ocean to pursue a path inland—one he would not survive.

Despite being from an old film, the video clip has grown in popularity during the first month of 2026. While the penguin is most likely experiencing disorientation or illness, leading it to act in ways contrary to its survival, many people interpret the penguin’s actions as intentional.

Some view the clip as a representation of being burned out and overworked by hustle culture. They see the penguin as a symbol of no longer seeing the meaning behind traditional hustle culture or existence—hence the name “Nihilistic Penguin.”

People are seeing this clip as a reflection of burnout from the lack of fulfillment and success they achieved despite “hustling,” especially in an economy where you are no longer guaranteed rewards equivalent to your labor.

Take this Instagram creator, for instance, who talks about how working longer hours with a higher salary can equate to being paid the same hourly wage as someone who works and is paid less. On top of that, hustling to get a promotion is also worth less in the modern era since, even though productivity has gone up, pay has not kept up at the same rate—meaning you are working harder to earn less.

Many are viewing the “Nihilistic Penguin” as a sign to step away from the traditional hustle culture corporations sell us, and realize that we are not satisfied with just being “cogs in the machine” until we can afford retirement. No more “we all have 24 hours in a day” or working hard now to maybe be able to work less in the future.

The penguin video is about waking up and realizing the society we live in is no longer as purposeful as we would like. The penguin’s actions are about rejecting the expectations put onto us and choosing a different route. As this Instagram user says, the walk is a calm and calculated one, away from a world that no longer suits us.

Despite the penguin’s slim-to-none chances of surviving his journey, most look at the video as a sign to not give up, rather than to quietly quit or abandon hope. They see it as a sign to find your true passion and hustle toward that, even if the journey is not conventional. The penguin, after all, wasn’t wandering. He was heading toward the mountains.

Many even argue that the penguin is, actually, not nihilistic at all. Despite not seeing the purpose or value in staying near resources and his group, the penguin distinctly chose to head toward the mountains instead of revoking all meaning and just staying where he was until he died. The penguin may have rejected the meaning that he was given, but he found his own meaning by starting his journey toward the mountains. This Instagram user argues that this was not a “Nihilistic Penguin,” he was an “Alive Penguin.”

The penguin has even become some people’s source of motivation. Individuals have begun shifting their “hustle” mindset and are now putting their energy toward their own dreams, rather than aiming for the monetary success traditional hustle culture leads us to pursue. This is especially important this month, as people begin making new goals and implementing new routines at the turn of the year.

At the end of the day, while people may not share exact interpretations of the “Nihilistic Penguin” clip, they share the same sentiment. They view the actions of the penguin as a reflection of their own wants and desires, even if the animal they are sharing them with is thousands of miles away. And while the interpretations might not be true to the penguin, the online discussions about the penguin’s intentions have brought up shared feelings about and problems with modern society.

No matter how you look at the “Nihilistic Penguin,” one thing is for sure—the meme is trending not because we see a penguin walking toward the mountains, but because we see ourselves. We see our desires. We see the humanity of it all.

While some may see the penguin as motivation to conquer Greenland, others have more positive and fulfilling goals. Hustling doesn’t mean seeking the most success as defined by society, but it means seeking the most success as defined by you. If you want to start that business, start that business. If you want to start a family, start a family. If you want to spend more time doing the things you love, hustle to make more time to do just that.

Hustle culture is not over, the priorities of it have just shifted. At the end of the day, the “Nihilistic Penguin,” just like existence, is about what you make of it.
