Animal lovers may not show too much sympathy as a big game lion hunter has been shot dead in what has been described as a freak accident whilst he was out hunting.

Pero Jelenic, 75, died while aiming at a lion after a stray bullet hit him. He was out in South Africa in the North West province and local reports say he had already killed one lion and was about to hunt his second before the bullet struck him.

Jelenic was airlifted to the hospital but the doctors were unable to save him.

His friend, Slavko Pernar, described Jelenic, who is from Croatia, as a “passionate hunter for big and small game” and that he “wanted to get a lion trophy after hunting everything that could be hunted in Europe.”

So from the sounds of it he was a big fan of shooting defenceless animals and although it hasn’t been proven that someone shot him on purpose, police are do not suspect foul play. Investigations are ongoing to find out who fired the fatal shot or if there had been a gun malfunction.
