A month later, after the AE x Sweeney campaign, Katseye has shown us who has the best jeans. The recent Gap campaign has shown us that ’90s fashion, including low-rise denim, baggy jeans, and pleated skirts, is making a comeback among the growing Gen Z generation. To fully cement this, they chose Katseye as the head of the campaign.
The viral advertisement features the girl group and backup dancers synchronously dancing to the song Milkshake by Kelis, with the six members in the collection wearing clothes to demonstrate the elasticity of the products to increase traffic within the brand.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the ad reached over 576 million views, including over 29 million views on YouTube and at least 138 million impressions on TikTok.
The clothing brand and the iconic girl group have gotten widespread praise and support from fashionistas and Eyekons (the group’s fanbase name) and have even inspired Tyla in a TikTok that displays her doing the Katseye choreography to ‘Mooo!’ by Doja Cat.
Who is Katseye?
For those wondering who Katseye is, the group has six members: Sophia Laforteza (the leader), Manon Bannerman, Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Megan Skiendiel, and Yoonchae Jeung. The six formed as a dance group in 2023 on Netflix’s Dream Academy.
Because of their incredible dance moves, resemblance to other major K-pop girl groups like NewJeans and aespa, and diverse ethnic backgrounds, they’ve become the most famous global girl group, with hit singles like ‘Gnarly,’ ‘Gabriela,’ etc.
They have also gained over 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify (which is unbelievable progress in just two years). From my viewpoint, their individuality is everything to me.
American Eagle x Sydney Sweeney
After American Eagle released many ads featuring Sydney Sweeney styling in AE clothing and ending each ad with “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” many public criticisms have flooded social media for weeks.
According to NPR, some reasons for the criticism include oversexualization (the actress has been subject to oversexualization following the bathwater soap situation and the commercial itself) and the assumption that the ad campaign promotes eugenics, a discredited belief that the human race could be improved by selective breeding (disabled people, minorities, LGBTQ+, etc., were affected by this theory).
The commercial, in terms of genetics, is a nod to the 1980 Calvin Klein commercial featuring then-14-year-old Brooke Shields. Many people have praised the Katseye x Gap campaign for its avoidance of promoting eugenics, lack of diversity, and sexualization.
Gap CEO Richard Dickson has described the ad as a “cultural takeover.” Some publications, such as Forbes, noticed the ad was coincidentally released a month after the AE x Sweeney ad campaign.
