Sign Language interpreters are becoming more of a staple at concerts lately and it’s about damn time. When a video of Holly Maniatty translating at a Public Enemy concert went viral this week she established herself as a total badass.
ASL interpreters bring a new and inclusive element to the concert experience and after watching Maniatty go off to Public Enemy it’s hard not to wonder why more artists aren’t touring with translators like her.
A few weeks ago Chance the Rapper posted a Facebook alongside DEAFinately Dope founder Matthew Maxey announcing that his Tampa show will have translators, and it will be a new thing going forward.
Maxey, who will be providing the interpreters for Chance, says on his website; “I’d like to make hip-hop and R&B, more versatile in regards to the kind of music people ask us to perform. Changing the way you experience hip-hop and R&B through sign language.” I think everyone’s totally ready for more awesome interpreters with our favorite artists.
