Following the conviction of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd last May, the site of the killing has become a place of memorial for the many black victims of police violence. Now, a sign has been put up reminding all visitors- white in particular- to mind their behaviour when visiting the square.

The site of the killing has been memorialised and dubbed ‘George Floyd Square’, a place of ‘community, public grief, and protest’. The intersection is located at East 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, Minneapolis.

A sign spotted at the site last Wednesday reminds visitors to enter with respect and compassion.

In particular, the sign speaks to white people, urging mindfulness, support, and decentralisation.

‘Come to listen, learn, mourn, and witness. Remember you are here to support, not to be supported’ The sign reads. ‘Do not take photos of other people without their consent

‘If you witness white folks doing problematic things, speak up with compassion to take the burden of off Black folks and our siblings of color whenever appropriate’

The sign sparked a level of controversy online, with some criticising the phrasing of the instructions:

While others saw the instructions as a necessary reminder:

The Murder of George Floyd

On May 25th, 2020, 46-year-old George Floyd was recorded being placed under arrest on suspicion of passing a counterfeit $20 note. Chauvin, an officer of the Minneapolis Police Department, kneeled on a handcuffed Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, ultimately leading to his death.

The footage, filmed by then-17-year-old Darnella Frazier, went viral and eventually became a key piece of evidence used in the conviction of Chauvin almost a year later on April 20th, 2021.

Chauvin was found guilty on charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, and faces up to 40 years in prison.

Organisers of George Floyd Square vow to continue to block traffic to the intersection until justice is served and demands are met- including the trial and conviction of the other three officers involved in the murder of Floyd: J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao.

The three other former officers are set to stand trial in August of this year, charged with aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter in relation to the killing of Floyd in May 2020.
