Alex Désert is replacing Hank Azaria to better represent Carl Carlson on The Simpsons. During the recent awareness of racial injustice, several voice actors who are not Black but yet portraying Black roles, have stepped down.
This will be the 32nd season of The Simpsons, with the season premiere releasing on September 27th. The show commented earlier in 2020 that they would no longer have White actors voicing Black characters, with no word on who would replace the voices. Well, we now know that Alex Désert will be the new voice of Carl!
Désert is known for his roles in tv shows like The Flash, Boy Meets World, Becker, and The Heights, as well as in movies like Swingers, Let It Shine, High Fidelity, and Lego: The Adventures of Clutch Powers. He also voiced Nick Fury in the animated series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
He seems super excited to take on this role! During this time, other animated series have had White actors step down from their non-White character roles. Some of these shows include: Big Mouth, Family Guy, and Central Park.
We are not sure yet if Désert will be voicing multiple characters, as many actors do in animations. Variety released that another Black character voiced by a White person, Dr Julius M. Hibbert, will appear in the newest episode but not say anything.
Carl Carlson is a beloved character who works alongside Homer Simpson and Lenny Leonard at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant as a Safety Operations Supervisor. The three have been friends since childhood, and people sure find them entertaining!
