Captive Creatures Rehomed: Two Beluga Whales Transported to New Ocean Refuge 6,000 Miles Away

Two Beluga whales held captive in China have been freed after nine years.

Two Beluga whales held captive in China have now been freed after nine years. With the aid of a team of global experts, Little Grey and Little White were brought to The Sea Life Trust Beluga Whale sanctuary 6,000 miles away.

The two 12-year-old female whales were moved from a Russian research centre to Chengfeng Ocean world in Shanghai in 2011. Here, they were trained for entertainment purposes, performing tricks to attract and amaze crowds. Yet these facilities were not suitable for creatures of their size.

The efforts of British Charity, the Sea Life Trust, ensured the two Beluga whales travelled on Friday, August 8 to the world’s first open water sanctuary for Belugas located at Klettsvik Bay in Iceland.

Since, the head of Sea Life Trust, Andy Bool released a statement:

‘We’re absolutely delighted to be able to share the news that Little Grey and Little White are safely in their sea sanctuary care pools and are just one step away from being released into their wider open water home.

Following extensive planning and rehearsals, the first stage of their release back to the ocean was as smooth as we had hoped and planned for. We are carefully monitoring Little Grey and Little White with our expert care team and veterinarians and hope to announce their final release very soon.’

Despite their name ‘little’ suggesting their meekness, these whales have in fact shown resilience through their endurance across air, land and sea in order to reach their safe haven. For full details of their journey click here or watch this video:

To ensure their comfort, they were transported in specially designed slings and travelled alongside experts and vets. According to the charity, they are now adjusting to their new environment, are healthy and being prepped for their imminent final release.
