The Mexican drug lord has been convicted for crimes committed over a span of 25 years.

Known for the most part as ‘El Chapo’, Joaquin Guzman has been sentenced to life in prison, after being found guilty of crimes such as the trafficking of hundreds of tonnes of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States, weapons-related offences, money laundering.

El Chapo, who is the former leader of the Sinaloa organisation, is most well known for his high-profile prison breaks, his first being in 2001.

After hiding in Sinaloa for 13 years, El Chapo was recaptured in 2014, but again escaped in July of 2015 from the maximum security Altiplano prison.  This escape was carefully planned, as it was revealed that a GPS watch had in fact been smuggled into his cell, while his sons purchased a property nearby the prison. From this property, a mile long tunnel was constructed through which El Chapo was able to escape.

Talk about being inventive.

Thankfully, El Chapo was recaptured once again in 2016, this time being extradited to the US to be kept a closer eye on.

El Chapo was once upon a time one of the worlds richest man (I’m not really surprised when you consider what he’s been getting up to for 25 years). He even made it to Forbes’ 2009 rich list.

Oh how the mighty fall.

Well, at last it seems like he is behind bars for good. He’ll remain at Metropolitan Correctional Center while going through trial.

If El Chapo’s story is interesting to you, you should take a look at this chart which compares his ‘career’ with that of Pablo Escobar.
