How Netflix’s Korean Show Squid Game Has Become Scarily Obsessive for Millions of Viewers

Fans express their obsession over online platforms.

Who would think that a show based on a children’s game and features scenes of characters being shot in the head and organ harvesting would become the most popular show on Netflix currently? The Korean show is currently streaming in the UK and the USA and already has large global popularity.

Netflix’s Co-Chief Executive Ted Sarandos truly believes Squid Game is on its way to becoming Netflix’s biggest non-English title so far and could be their most popular show around the world.

Fans of the show have raced online to comment what they think of this disturbing show that has been likened to the Hunger Games. One fan connected on Twitter, “Oh my God. I just smashed Squid Game on Netflix. I had no idea what it was going to be about but half an episode in I could not stop watching! Shocking, gory, brutal and I bloody loved it!”

Many comments online reiterate the fact that since the show is so “bloody and gruesome”, they have been finding it difficult to “peel their eyes” away from the screen.

To take this obsession one step further, some TikTokers online have decided to recreate certain scenes from the show. The TikTok star Theblondejon and his friends were seen being herded into a pen to reenact a game from the first episode in the series called ‘Red Light, Green Light’. The TikTok video features the words of the creepy giant killer doll Mugunghwa.

Mugunghwa’s words have already been used on more than 200,000 TikTok videos and some fans have already found versions of the killer robot girl have been found in some shopping malls. For example, Vanessa Perez, from the Philippines has already found a recreation of the doll in a local shopping mall.

It seems obvious that a sequel has to be in the pipeline with the massive success of this first series. Writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk told Variety that, “I don’t have well-developed plans for Squid Game 2 … It is quite tiring just thinking about it… but if I were to do it, I would certainly not to do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”

Unfortunately for fans,  a sequel may not be immediate. Though it seems very clear that this show has become very influential, for better or for worse.
