Robots are very slowly taking over our lives, and in more ways, than you might expect. Electronics company Omron has released a robot that can play and beat you at ping-pong.
One would expect in the twenty-first century that developers would be increasing the capacity of robots exponentially. However, I am not sure that I would hold this development with as high a regard as I did with the introduction of Sofia (although I do find her kind of creepy)
This robot is called Forpheus and is essentially really good at ping-pong. It uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to interpret a player’s skill and adapts its own ability to play accordingly. Admittedly, this is a pretty cool thing to be able to do… I’m just not entirely sure of the point of it?
Forpheus also flashes up uplifting and inspiring messages, which is a pretty cute feature. Whilst I don’t think this will be the next big ‘must-have’ Christmas present, I’m certain the technology behind Forpheus will be developed to even cooler and more sophisticated things.
