When one Australian dad cracked his tooth and found no dentists open over the Christmas period, he decided to bite the bullet – and drilled his own broken tooth using a power tool.
Sometime during the Christmas holidays, 62-year-old Bob Lowther cracked his tooth while eating a prawn and initially left it alone, hoping the malady would improve with a good night’s sleep.
However, he woke up only to discover his tongue cut by the jagged edge of his cracked tooth. Known to his family as a ” very avid DIYer” who has renovated several houses in the past, he decided to fix the broken tooth himself using a power tool. How different is house renovation to drilling your own tooth anyway?

To many, this feat of DIY dentistry would seem not only daring but exceedingly dangerous, but Lowther insists that the procedure was not dangerous as the cracked tooth was only an implant. Speaking to LADbible, he said:
I have what is called an ‘all on four’ implanted set of teeth, cost $50,000 (£26,365) and guaranteed for life. Not sure what made the bottom plate break but it came away as I was eating a prawn.
That must have been a particularly tough prawn to crack an expensive guaranteed implant. Yet not tough enough to break the spirit (or keep the tooth broken) of a reckless Aussie dad, as the potentially disastrous dental procedure worked out to be a soaring success in the end, with Lowther claiming that it “worked perfectly”.
Although Lowther was quick to emphasise that the impromptu dental drilling “wasn’t really as dangerous as it looks”, his son shared the video of his dad drilling his own tooth with the caption “Dumb s*** dads do”. Drilling your own tooth with a power tool doesn’t seem like an especially commonplace dad phenomenon though, does it?
