If you are missing the cinematic wonders of the big screen, look no further than this elaborate rollercoaster of an Australian Lamb advert, where delicious lamb crumble walls.
The advertisement forms an elaborate backstory of an Australia ten years in the future in 2031, divided by ‘great state walls’, which are united only by the scent and taste of delicious lamb and the national identity of a barbecue.
Walls are shown to separate the ‘states’ of Australia, presumably as a result of some dystopian twist of coronavirus in the future. Giant letters read ‘New South Wall’, for example. But as the walls that divide Australia are quite literally pulled down, the archetypical Australian cheekiness prevails, including a tongue-in-cheek hole placement.
Perhaps the walls are insensitivity too familiar to the very real Berlin wall, pulled down only in 1989 after nearly three decades of sufferance and international political turmoil. On the other hand, the advert brings together our remembrance of the past and our experience of the present, to remind us that we will soon be united, and Australia will soon be back at the ‘barbie’.
The advertisement also makes subtle digs at America. The wall may be making fun of Trump’s famous American-Mexican border wall tall promise that now, after his election defeat, has not materialised. At one moment, an almost sarcastically stereotypically Australian man, tells us ‘it is not the United States of Australia, just Australia’.
What is undeniable, however, it is clear that now more than ever we need a good laugh. So take a look for yourself. Is it like marmite (or should I say vegemite) and you either love it or you hate it? You decide.
Why might you reasonably ask did Australian Lamb pull this stunt with an elaborate backstory? “Because what unites us is more delicious than what divides us”.
