Which one should you choose?

If your New Year’s resolution is to give to charity, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed. Where do you begin? How do you decide on the right charity for you? How much money are you able to give each month? There are a number of different factors to take into account. You will find our step-by-step guide below to help you get started.

How much can you afford to give to charity?

The first thing you need to do is budget. While we would all like to give tons of money to charity, the reality is that most of us cannot afford to. This is why you need to sit down and work out an effective budget plan. Work out how much money you have coming in and out per month. Make sure you deduct an amount for living expenses. You can then see how much money you have available per month, and you can select a figure that you can comfortably afford to give to charity on a monthly basis.

Choosing something that matters to you

Once you have an idea regarding how much money you can give to charity, you then need to look for a cause that matters to you. It is a good idea to look online for some inspiration. The Le-Vel Thrive case is a good place to start. The company supported a number of different foundations throughout the season of giving, including Toys for Tots and the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). You may be able to find a cause you are passionate about by reading their story. Of course, there are many other stories just like this, which is why it is important to look online for some inspiration before deciding on the right charity for you. You will be probably be shocked by just how many options there are available to you.

Narrow down the type of organization

Once you have found a cause that really matters to you, you then need to think about the type of charity you want to give to. Do you want to give to a small organization because you know your donation could make a massive difference to one family or individual? Or, would you prefer to give to a bigger charity because you feel your combined efforts with other members could lead to a monumental change for people all over the world?

Look for results

This is the trickiest aspect of them all. You need to try and find a charity that delivers the results you seek. Essentially, you are trying to assess the effectiveness of the charity. Have they been achieving what they aim to do? Do they operate financially? These are some of the questions you need to be asking yourself when looking for a charity to support.

Perform due diligence

While most charities are genuine, there are some fake charities out there. Unfortunately, there are people that prey on vulnerabilities so they can extract money for themselves. It’s a sad truth, and one you need to be very wary of. So, make sure that the charity you are considering is a legitimate charity.

Remember, donating money is not the only option…

It is also important to keep in mind that donating money is not the only way to give back. There are plenty of other ways to help people and support the causes you care about. For example, you could donate items you no longer need rather than donating money. If you have warm winter clothing or coats you don’t wear, why not give them to the homeless? Or, if you have an old computer or any other type of tech you aren’t going to use anymore, give them to the less fortunate rather than simply throwing them away. Another way to give back is by giving your time. There are many organizations that are in desperate need of volunteers to help them with their mission. This could be anything from collecting goods for holiday food drives to working in soup kitchens. Not only is this helpful, but it can be incredibly rewarding and inspirational. You will meet some amazing people along the way.

Hopefully, you now feel more confident about choosing the right charitable cause and donating an amount that you can afford. Follow the steps that have been suggested, and you can’t go wrong.
