Hunger awakens Taiwan teenager from 62-day coma after hearing the words ‘chicken fillet’.

In September, 18-year-old Chiu was injured in a traffic accident while riding his scooter. He was taken to the ICU at Ton Yen General Hospital in Hsinchu County and was reported to have suffered serious damage to his internal organs as well as injuries to his right kidney and liver. While doctors were able to stabilise him, he ended up in a coma.

Chiu’s family remained by his bedside and prayed that he would wake up. It’s known that coma patients can recover consciousness significantly faster when loved ones talk to them and tell familiar stories of up to four times a day.

It was unsure if Chiu would recover and for more than 60 days, a nurse at the hospital said that Chiu was in a “tug of war with the god of death”. It was only after his older brother threatened to eat his favourite chicken fillet on the 62nd day that Chiu suddenly regained consciousness.

Chiu must have been very hungry or determined not to let his brother get away with such a joke.

The teen has now fully recovered and has been discharged. We hope that he has eaten his favourite chicken fillet since!
