American football is a way of life for some in The States. The culture surrounding the sport can feel almost cult-life to many — there are parties called “tailgating”, fans who paint themselves top to bottom, and the notion that American Football is superior to all sports. But the thing that takes the cake about American Football is the stadiums. They are like giant monuments to how great people in The States think American Football is and some of the stadiums cost A TON to build.

SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California now holds the title of “World’s Most Expensive” stadium. It cost around $5 BILLION to construction and touts many amazing amenities. Construction on this monolithic stadium began in 2016 and began amid much drama. The cities SoFi Stadium actually was built in are historically Black and Latinx cities — these disproportionately discriminated groups were pushed out of their neighborhoods for this stadium to be built. Gentrification in American cities proves time and again what The States value most.

Despite petitions begging the developer, Stanley Kroenke, to not built over their neighborhoods, the project went through. They officially broke ground in November of 2016 and the project was proclaimed completed during a virtual ribbon cutting on September 8, 2020. So what makes this stadium so special? I mean, it’s just for a sports game, right?

Well according to the Sofi Stadium main website, this is a first of its kind, state of the art arena. It can hold around 70,000 fans but then expand to hold up to 100,000 for special events! Apparently, it was built to be “fan-first”, it has more than 260 private suites, seven suite concepts, 12 club spaces, and more than 13,000 premium seats. One of the big things SoFi brags is a 90,000 square feet of digital LED in the seating bowl alone — 70,000 that is the largest video-board in sports… it is, of course, 4K HD all around.

While the stadium will supposedly host the 2022 Super Bowl, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2028 Olympics, and many big names in music for concerts, the entire arena screams of excess. There are many things The States could do without and another giant sports arena is definitely one of them! Plus, not that anyone in 2016 could have known what awaited them in 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic fans can’t go to games like they used to…

So we want to know: would you go to SoFi Stadium? Would you go to watch a concert, a big sports game, or just show up to see what it was like? Let us know in the comments! And as always from all of us at Trill!: stay safe, wash your hands, and Go Primer League!
