Despite the 30% weekly rent increase, a Queensland real estate agency is under fire after encouraging tenants to buy their landlords Christmas gifts.

An agency near Brisbane called Kanik & Co. reached. Out to tenants via email to offer their assistance in the facilitation of their gift buying as well as any ‘handwritten notes’ for the owner of the properties.

The suggested gifts are as followed:

  • A gift named ‘all things golden’ ($115)
  • A posh ‘foodies hamper’ ($99)
  • ‘Self care hamper’ ($70)
  • ‘Festive sweets basket’ ($55)
  • ‘White wine grazing box’ ($50)

These gifts are something you would not typically give to someone who just takes your money but to your significant other or your closest family member.

Above is the email sent out to tenants seen from the Twitter account of Sinead Canning. It reads:

‘This year has been particularly challenging for both our tenants and property owners alike, and we understand some tenants would like to thank their property owner for everything in 2021. The choice to be involved is 100% optional and you are certainly under no obligation to do so.’

Canning Tweeted:

‘This agency is in Logan, where the average weekly rent has increased by 30 per cent in the last 5 years and the vacancy rate is 1 per cent.’

Michael Kanik, director to Kanik & Co spoke to The Guardian, and apologized if any offense was taken by the email to its tenants. They apparently just ‘wanted to do a nice thing.’

Kanik took the opportunity to also point out that they sent out a similar email for landlords to send their tenants gifts but ‘not all landlords are the same.’ He pointed out that not all landlords which to the the rent increase.
